according to this Yahoo list: Top Ten Rock Bands10. Radiohead 9. Beach Boys 8. U2 7. Metallica 6. Who 5. Rolling Stones 4. Pink Floyd 3. Queen 2. Led Zeppelin 1. The Beatles Honorable Mention: Doors, Black Sabbath, Ramones, Clash, Nirvana Interesting list. Looks like a mix of classic early rock (Beatles, Stones, Who, Beach Boys), 70's rock (Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd) metal (Metallica) and modern rock 80's / 90's (Radiohead, U2). Love The Beatles of course and The Who, Zeppelin and Metallica. Hated Beach Boys as a kid - Surf music? , but grew to really like and admire them in my older age.

I feel that you can't really appreciate The Beach Boys without some sophisticated musical sensibility. After all, you need to like harmony and chromatic progression, which aren't as accessible as, say, the melody.
The Who's 1970s album Who's Next was my favorite album of all time for a long long time. Then, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon blew it away. Eventually, my tastes changed and I got turned on to jazz.
I feel The Carpenters got hosed.
Freddie Mercury was my favorite singer, until I got turned on more by instrumentals and less by voice.
If I hear "Hey Jude" or "Stairway to Heaven" one more time, I'm afraid I might hurt somebody.

A list without Aerosmith loses a good deal of credibility IMO. I also wouldn't classify the Beach Boys as a rock band.

I personally think The Who is the most overrated band of all time. Certainly the most pretentious. Pete Townshend. Yikes.

I also wouldn't classify the Beach Boys as a rock band. The thought has crossed my mind. This classification argument goes on all the time. One could argue that the term "rock & roll" or "rock band" or simply "rock" refers to the time period and the structural makeup of the band. For example, lead guitar, check. Lead vocal, check. Bass guitar, check. Rhythm guitar, check. Drums, check. The Beach Boys had all the components that make up a rock band. They were also competing with the likes of the Stones and the Beatles for record sales. So, one could argue the Beach Boys = rock band. You could go by the sound of their music. Yes, the Beach Boys were heavy into harmonic sounds (Barbershop Quartet-like), so people dismiss them. But, they also recorded a lot of "heavy metal" rock songs in their day: Surfin' Safari, Surfin USA, Little Deuce Coupe, Fun Fun Fun, Help Me Rhonda. Conversely, the Beatles composed and performed many songs that no one would classify as rock: Martha My Dear, When I'm 64, Bungalow Bill, I Will, Julia, Mother Nature's Son, Revolution (this one defies classification), Till There Was You (a Broadway song from The Music Man), Goodnight, Yellow Submarine, etc. Elvis himself is considered rock & roll, but he sang an awful lot of country and cheesy pop. This issue comes up a lot wrt "classical music." The purists would say Bach isn't classical, because he's baroque (he lived and composed in the Baroque era). Mozart and Haydn are classical because they lived and composed in the Classical Era. Beethoven and Chopin are from the Romantic Era, so they're not really classical music either. But the general public would have you believe that all instrumental music pre-1900s is classical music. Well, what about the "classical" music from the 20th Century, e.g., Prokofiev, Rachmaninov, Richard Strauss? The public would say they're classical music even though they're thoroughly modern.

The Beach Boys are as much of a rock band as The Beatles, and Pet Sounds alone is one of the ten greatest rock albums ever made. McCartney has said that Pet Sounds was the primary influence for the making of "Sgt. Pepper's"
These lists pop up all the time, it seems, but there simply isn't any way to definitely choose the "best." Too many variables, too much subjectivity.
That said, any list that doesn't even mention either The Kinks or Creedence Clearwater (both hugely successful and hugely influential) should be dismissed out of hand.
And of all the British Invasion bands, The Who consistently produced the most interesting music.

Back then, I couldn't listen to Who's Next in a loop because we had the player that played vinyl records. Playing in a loop meant physically walking over to the record player and manually lifting the needle arm and placing it back in the groove of the first track. If you had a cassette tape player, you had to rewind and then press Play. If you had an 8-track, it was much simpler. Just jump to the track closest to the beginning. In many ways, the 8-track was quite the innovation. Oddly enough, now that playing in a loop is easily available, I don't have the urge to listen to Who's Next.

I always got the Kinks, the Knack, and the Moody Blues confused. I know, the Moody Blues don't even have the letter "K" in their name. I always associate Ray Davies with the Moody Blues even though he's with the Kinks. Whenever "You Really Got Me" played on the radio back then, I said to my friends, "Man, I love the Moody Blues."
