With the last '13 season behind us, the Big West managed to crown Three-Teams <UCSB, Cal.St. Northridge, & Hawai'i> as 2014 draws-up schedules are already out for some schools. I'm not so sure that this Tri-event will ever happen again this year. With the title up in the air and up for grabs, im sure that teams will definitely step up and make a run for it. I wouldn't be so surprised that the other programs are definitely going to give it a go. But please pick 2 teams and list them first place and second place.
Hawai'i, Long Beach State

1. Hawaii. They have enough fire power to take the big west, and with olivia magill coming in, the middle will definitely be stronger. Yes Hawaii loses hartong, longo and uiato, but they have a very capable setter in higgins. Nikki taylor is a star and can take alot of the power needed with hartongs departure, and if kalei greeley pans out, she will be a force for Hawaii.
2. Long beach State Return their entire starting line up besides Delainey. Expect them to compete with Hawaii for the title. They have all the fire power to do so.
3. Ucsb. They lose Sherrard, Thompson and Sully. Those are very big loses. They still have very capable players, but I dont see them with the season they had last year.
4. Cal State Northridge. Northridge loses Haina and Gedryn. Haina was one of their main weapons and Gedryn was arguably the best setter in the conference. They do return allen and hinger, who should be able to take the load of the others with hainas loss, but I dont expect them to be at the top.
5. Cal poly. I know this is a shocker, but cal poly has been doing nothing but improving. They do lose some key players, but overall, I think they return enough to play very well in 2014.
6. UC Davis. With the loss of Damelio and Woolway, and with no one of the bench to really take over for the loses of those players, I dont expect much improvement or decline from them. Just stagnate really.
7. UC Irvine Losing Flemming and Squires is a huge thing for the anteaters, considering with them, they still didnt finish that great in the Big west. They might be a little more tough than what Im thinking, but I dont thin they will do better than 5 and 7 seems like the average place they will compete.
8. Cal State Fullerton Same reason they finished second to last in 2013 will be the reason they finish second to last in 2014. Not alot of fire power on the team and they dont have the other skills to help counter act this.
9. UC riverside. Not gaining anything and with the loss of their starting setter and their highest hitting percentage player mckoy (who hit only .275), I expect riverside to have the same type of season.

Still might to a touch too early to tell. I'm still waiting to see all the 2014 rosters with transfers and last minute recruits. Several Long Beach fans have noted that setter Juley's injuries from last season but bringing in Hudson from Iowa State. It's also important to note that Hampton won't be back for the Beach in 2014, as she is transferring to Clemson.
But I like Long Beach's chances to take the title away from Hawaii. UCI and Cal Poly are probably my dark horses. UCSB has Spindt who looks could be ready to set up as the go to.

It will probably be a down year for the league, but you never know. Maybe the last time all that much was not expected from Hawaii, they went 30-1 (yay on the 1). I really hope Long Beach can get it going some again to make that a big rivalry again. It sounds like it was pretty epic in the 90s.

In regards to Long Beach, they need to get back out in2 the vb scene. Im guessing its been 2 seasons since they haven't been to the tourney and have been on that decline season-train due to major injuries. I just hope Long Beach gets off that train and start revamping there volleyball soon.

So with Consani leaving Fullerton for UCLA (not sure I understand that move), what are Fullerton's setting options?

So with Consani leaving Fullerton for UCLA (not sure I understand that move), what are Fullerton's setting options? Looking at their roster, they have Shannon Bell who will be a sophomore but only played one set as a freshman and Mackenzie Olsen a junior who transferred in from Delaware.

Thanks, I was aware of those names. I was wondering about the relative abilities of these two girls, or if there might be another transfer setter headed Fullerton's way.

Haven't seen Hawaii this spring, but I have seen CSULB, UCI, UCSB, Northridge and Fullerton in the spring tourneys and of that group Long Beach is WAY ahead.
