For the most part, teams have open gym workouts during most of the offseason, summer included. (It's probably better if we didn't call them practices.)
So the question is, can an incoming freshmen who is taking summer classes participate in these? I think not, because even though she is enrolled, she is still treated as a recruit until she reports in August. If she had enrolled and attended the spring semester, that would be different.

Incoming freshman ARE working out with their teams while they are doing summer classes. Why else do you think coaches would insist they enroll early, skipping JOs and some decent summer training with their clubs, etc.?

FIVE THINGS TO WATCH IN 2014 (Cal Poly)Setter Not Settled: Cal Poly has a heated competition at the setter position this season with junior Maddie Kuber and freshman Taylor Nelson entering fall camp with the potential to be the Mustangs’ starter. While Kuber’s sophomore campaign was cut short due to an ACL injury suffered midway through the season, she still managed to finish sixth in the Big West Conference with a 9.19 assist average. Nelson, PrepVolleyball.com National Player of the Year and 2013 Gatorade Player of the Year, guided Granite Bay High School to a Division I California State Championship with a perfect 45-0 record in her final season. Benefiting from a winter enrollment at Cal Poly, she already has a head start entering the 2014 season with the additional training with the coaching staff. When speaking with Head Coach Sam Crosson, he mentioned that the setter position is up for grabs and both players will likely quarterback the team this season. The Future Is Bright: With five returning letterwinners, including All-Big West Honorable Mention member Taylor Gruenewald, and a highly-touted incoming class, Cal Poly hopes to continue its momentum created a season ago. In 2013, the Mustangs produced an eight-win turnaround season with a 12-17 mark and tied for fifth in the Big West Conference, the program’s highest showing in three years, after registering a 6-10 record. With nine freshmen listed on the 2014 roster, including two redshirts, some feel this may be a rebuilding year but the coaching staff – Crosson, and assistant coaches Caroline Walters and Chris Tamas – is approaching this year as an extension of what was created over the last two seasons at Cal Poly. So look for the Mustangs to continue to make strides to their ultimate goal of winning the conference championship. Diaper Dandies Put Up A Fight: The highly-touted incoming class has quite a few “who’s who” in women’s volleyball, including Caihla Petiprin and Raeann Greisen, who were teammates on the Junior Olympics championship team. Petiprin is a 6-1 middle blocker from Carlsbad, Calif., and Greisen, a 6-2 outside hitter, hails from San Diego, Calif. They may be diaper dandies but look for both to make a strong showing at their respective position as they battle for the starting role. All-Big West Honoree Returns: Cal Poly welcomes back sophomore Taylor Gruenewald, who earned All-Big West Honorable Mention and All-Freshman accolades last season. The Southlake, Texas, native finished the 2013 season ranked sixth in the league with a .302 hitting percentage while ranking 19th in kills with 266. She also led the team with 74 total blocks (0.69 blocks per set). Let The Games Begin: Cal Poly opens conference play with a bang as it visits 2013 Big West tri-champion and central coast foe UC Santa Barbara on September 27. The Mustangs follow that up with a pair of home contests against UC Davis and UC Riverside. Last season Cal Poly kicked off the conference portion of its schedule with a pair of wins, part of a season-long four-game win streak. As the season progresses, things definitely do not lighten up for the Mustangs as they close out the year playing three consecutive matches against the 2013 tri-champions - CSUN, Hawai’i and UC Santa Barbara. QUOTABLES – SAM CROSSON(On the freshman class) “We are very enthusiastic with the freshman class we have coming in, not just because of their skill set but because of who they are, the principles they have and their work ethic. We are very excited to see how everything plays out in the conference.” (On the veterans) “We will rely heavily on our three juniors for leadership. They are much more in tune with our program and our staff and understand the direction the program is going.” (On the schedule) “We have a lot of good teams on our schedule this year. We try to schedule teams that will challenge us and are competitive within their respective conference. And we have a lot of home contests which is new for the program this year.“ (On continuing to improve) “Based on the talent level we have, we are looking at this year being a continuation of the past few years, not necessarily a rebuilding year. We gauge our success on whether we are playing better than we were the week before.” (On freshman Raeann Greisen) “Of the incoming freshmen, she probably has the most skill set entering the season and the most prepared to play right away.” INSIDE THE NUMBERS8 Number of wins Cal Poly improved upon in 2013, Sam Crosson’s second season at the helm. 13 Total number of home contests played at Mott Gym this season, the most since 2008. 23 Ranking Cal Poly received in the PrepVolleyball.com Top 30 recruiting class for 2014. 60 Percentage of freshmen on the Mustangs’ 2014 roster. 72 The average height of Cal Poly’s 2014 women’s volleyball roster (in inches). I cannot predict the future, both teams are building for the future. Hawai'i is reloading. Next year (2015) they will get Castillo for starters -who will be an All American by the end of her colligiate career. Cal Poly could be building to where they will challenge for the title. Hawai''si incoming class is # 13 for the upcoming season, so potentially these freshmen will be leading the team in the near future.

FIVE THINGS TO WATCH IN 2014 (Cal State Fullerton)Can You Dig It?: Cal State Fullerton, known for its defense over the years, concluded the 2013 season ranked ninth in the nation in digs with a 17.66 average. The 2013 Titans were led by McKenna Painton, who posted a league-best 4.59 average in her freshman campaign, and Bre Moreland who sat eighth in the Big West with a 3.50 mark. The Titans lost Moreland in the offseason due to graduation, but Painton, a 2013 Big West All-Freshman Team honoree, returns to the lineup to lead the charge while defensive specialists/liberos senior Devin Ulmer, sophomore Delaney Gurol and freshman Skyler Thomas look to fill Moreland’s void. Crenshaw’s Climb: It is safe to say that middle blocker Holland Crenshaw has made huge strides between her freshman and sophomore seasons. In her first season donning blue and orange she finished fifth on the team in both kills (119) and points (186) and a year later she moved up to third in both categories with 219 kills and 262.5 points. The Santa Barbara, Calif., native was responsible for 16% of the Titans’ points in 2013, a seven-percent jump from the previous year. The coaching staff expects her growth to continue in 2014 and be a leader on and off the court. Filling The Void: Cal State Fullerton’s lineup took a hit in the offseason, losing 2013 All-Big West Conference honorees Bre Moreland and Alyse Hensley, and setter Julie Consani. Hensley and Moreland, both significant contributors on both sides of the net, finished among the Big West leaders in kills and kills per set in 2013. Hensley’s final kills per set average was 3.14 and Moreland’s was 3.16, both top 10. A few members of the 2014 incoming class, which received High Honorable Mention honors by PrepVolleyball, will be vying for the spots left by the All-Big West duo. Consani finished 2013 ranked second in the league in assists with an 11.08 average, which earned her the 10th spot in CSF’s single-season record book, while concluding her Titan career with 2,077 career assists to sit sixth in the school’s annals. She will likely be replaced by University of Delaware transfer Mackenzie Olsen. Fullerton Brings In New Help: Along with a handful of new recruits, Cal State Fullerton has two new additions to the coaching staff with the off-season hiring of Kevin Hitt and David Butler. Hitt was head coach at Villa Park High School for 15 years and produced a 253-116 record and later served as an assistant coach at several colleges, while Butler spent time as the Long Beach State volunteer assistant coach. Consistency From The Top: With several changes to the roster and coaching personnel over the years, one thing has remained consistent and that is Head Coach Carolyn Zimmerman. Entering her 13th season at the helm of the Titans women’s volleyball program, Zimmerman is tied for third for most tenured active Big West coach. Cal State Fullerton’s all-time winningest coach has amassed an all-time record of 173-185 (.483) and captured Big West Coach of the Year honors in 2010 after guiding the Titans to their first conference championship. QUOTABLES – CAROLYN ZIMMERMAN(On the team): “We have a young squad and a lot of new faces representing Titan volleyball and we expect to have them make an impact on the court.” (On Mackenzie Olsen): “A newcomer that I think will step up and be a real leader just by virtue of the position is Mackenzie Olsen. She reminds me of a setter I had in the past and is kind of an old soul. She is very humble but leads the team in many different ways, not only with her words but with her non-verbal language and her ability to set the offense.” (On keys to success in 2014): “I think the expectation every time we are on the court is to walk off the court with a ‘W’. We have a wide variety of opponents on our schedule in the preseason and have some legitimate opportunities for wins. It will depend on how the players step into the roles that we expect them to fill, their abilities to be efficient on the offensive end and our abilities to take our opponents out of system.” (On the strength of the Big West): ”I think the Big West is just going to continue like we have seen in the past couple of years. There is a lot of parity and on any given night wins can be exchanged by teams that haven’t necessarily been in the national spotlight. I hope, which will be different than years previous, that there is more respect drawn to the Big West.” (On the parity of the Big West): “I think people on the outside think that the level of volleyball has dropped in the Big West, when in fact the bottom has gotten much more competitive with the top and I think it is high time that the respect is given. The teams have the responsibility to continue to prove themselves and show the national public what the Big West is doing and the level of volleyball we are capable of playing.” INSIDE THE NUMBERS1 Senior on Cal State Fullerton’s 2014 youthful roster 4 First-time opponents featured on the Titans roster 6 McKenna Painton’s ranking in CSF’s single-season digs per set with a 4.59 mark her freshman year (2013) 73 Percentage of wins Cal State Fullerton recorded by virtue of a sweep last season 2010 Year Cal State Fullerton captured its first Big West women’s volleyball title See more at: www.bigwest.org/story.asp?STORY_ID=17837#sthash.15Js8ZUW.dpuf
