Letz at Stanford is at least 6'8" but not exactly national team material yet. Hanson (sp?) at BYU should return to volleyball and get a look at the national team someday.

Hamson is 6'7" but with her having been drafted by the LA Sparks I doubt she will continue with volleyball after her senior season. She does return to the court for the next time tmrw for the US college national team. Slay is 6'6. American had a giant last year who was probably near 6'7".

After the 4 game friendly vs. Brazil, the US definitely looks like one of the favorites in the WGP. They will go as far as they can pass. I thought new offense worked pretty darn well with a decent pass.
Brazil, Serbia (they might finally be healthy again!), and China are the other contenders. The US and Brazil definitely have a strong rivalry, but it would not surprise me to see China as the top team in the world.

I think Italy will be better now that Lucia Bossetti is healthy. Centoni played out of her mind this past club season and is going to challenge Diouf for the starting opposite spot. I'm also glad to see Ferretti back on the team. Signorile and Camera were not cutting it. Serbia and Bulgaria will be very good as well.

I wouldn't write Hamson off regarding volleyball. I talked with her parents both in LA and in Lincoln during the NCAA BB tournament and I asked specifically about what sport Jennifer prefers and might choose long term. At that time dad said she would definitely be playing VB this fall and no decision would be made until after the season and she weighs all her options. My guess is that she might have more opportunities available as a volleyball player. However, playing BB fairly close to home might be a pretty big draw.

I'm sad Belgium isn't in the big girls group this year. Their team is talented, young and fun to watch- will have to wait till World Championship.
That said, I'm a fan of the smaller elite group. There were a lot of no competitive matches last year, and having so many bad teams really made finals qualification schedule-dependent. This year should be tougher and more balanced.

We won't see them this year.

As a reference, Hamson would make around $40,000/year for her first three seasons in the WNBA. Could she make more than that playing volleyball overseas? I'd have to think so.

Keep in mind that the WNBA is a part-time job for most players. The big money is overseas. A solid WNBA player is bringing in low six figures between domestic and international play, and stars are in the million bucks a year range.
