Just for fun
Not necessarily by where they always played
S - Stork OH - Timmons OH - Anderson M - Buck M - Lee Opp - Stanley L - Kiraly....I'm sure I'll catch heat for this
subs - Ball, Priddy, Ctirvlik, Hoff, Berzins
Coach - Hugh...I liked him

For me Lee is n t so obvious.

I know...it's hard to place him though. I figured his ball control would lend itself to Libero. Timmons and Anderson were/are just so good.

And I couldn't pin another middle. Buck is a no brainer. Maybe Nygaard? Did he play middle?

I like the heady play and smooth steadiness of Doug Partie in my all-time MB2 slot.

Karch not starting as OH1 just seems...wrong.
Did Timmons SR? I thought it was Karch and Berzins in 1984, and Karch and Ctvrtlik in 1988?
of course, having a non-passing OH is typically american, isn't it?
What about Jon Stanley? does he fit?
(I'm too young to have seen Stanley play, just have heard rumors of the Russian scouting report, and don't remember the 1980s).

I want a time warp where those 1980 teams, v. USA, all of a sudden face the Clayton Stanley serve.

Yeah you didn't see the jump missiles back then. Deep floaters mostly.

I grew up watching Ryan Millar play. He played in 3 or 4 Olympics and has a gold medal. He gets my vote for the other Middle.

The cool thing about Jon Stanley is that he is still playing competitively at the highest level, winning world championships with his masters team.

The game is so far beyond where it was. Although it might not be nice to say.. I think a more recent all star team would be flat out better.

Agreed, but Buck, Kiraly, Berzins, and Timmons, and likely Stork could play today's game.

For me Lee is n t so obvious. I remember hearing or reading a comment from Karch that he would play libero if he were in his prime today. As for Jon Stanley, here is a nice little write up: volleyballmag.com/articles/42682-jon-stanley-the-golden-years

Timmons was an opp never a passer...but lord could he bring the heat... heavy heavy ball.... Pat Powers had moments of being the best left side attacker in the world, although he ran a little hot and cold... but as a lanky 6'6" OH with some skill and a lightning fast arm, his abilities would definitely translate to the modern game...Stork would be a great setter at any level... great size and lefty... smart and tough- at his best maybe the best setter the USA has had...don't forget what a great athlete and defender E Sato was....

Oh and a side note on the Stanley jump serving reference... I am sure that Karch Aldis Cvertlik Saunders all the USA outsides in those days could handle passing in the modern era... but they were in 2 person... I remember that in the 88 Olympics Brazil beat USA in pool play ripping tons of jumpers...(this was at the beginning of bringing in the jumpie) and they won convincingly... in the medal round Brazil hit a ton out... and USA prevailed, but this ushered in the new era as the world discovered you could beat two person passing by ripping jumpers and the three person serve receive took over....
