I was in Minneapolis at JO's talking to two coaches who were from the same conference. Their respective schools started on the same date and I assume their first match was on the same date. Funny thing is, their practice start date was three days difference. How do coaches figure when their teams can begin practicing? Since you asked... 17.24.2 Preseason Practice - Women. A member institution shall not commence practice sessions in women's volleyball prior to the date that permits a maximum of 29 units (see Bylaw 17.02.11) prior to the first scheduled intercollegiate contest (excluding the early alumni match) or September 1, whichever is later. If the first scheduled contest occurs before September 1, the institution shall count back one practice unit for each day (excluding Sundays) from September 1 through the date of the first scheduled contest. Thereafter, the institution shall apply the formula as prescribed in Bylaw 17.02.11. 17.02.11 Practice Units. In determining the first permissible preseason practice date, an institution shall count back from its first scheduled contest, one unit for each day beginning with the opening of classes, one unit for each day classes are not in session in the week of the first scheduled intercollegiate contest and two units for each other day in the preseason practice period, except that the institution shall not count any units during the preseason when all institutional dormitories are closed, the institution's team must leave campus, and practice is not conducted. - 17.02.11.1 Sunday. Sundays are excluded from the counting.
- 17.02.11.2 Week. The "week" of the first scheduled intercollegiate contest is defined as the six days, excluding Sunday, preceding the date of competition (even if one or more of the days fall into different traditional calendar weeks).
- 17.02.11.3 Opening Day of Classes. The "opening day of classes" is defined at the first day of class as listed in the member institution's official catalog. Required freshman orientation is not considered to be the opening day of classes for the academic year.
- 17.02.11.4 First Day of Practice. The first day of practice may be conducted on the day when the last practice unit occurs, which is determined by counting backward from the day of the first permissible regularly scheduled contest. For example, in women's volleyball, practice may be held on the day that the 29th practice unit actually occurs, counting backward from the day of the first permissible regularly scheduled contest.

So it seems as if most programs will begin August 10th. Thanks for the information. Sundays don't count towards the practice units (see 17.02.11.1), so there is no way a team's first allowable day of practice is Sunday, August 10th.

I think the NCAA makes this too complicated. All they need to do is state the date that practices with coaches can begin for all schools. Everyone knows that summer workouts and open gyms allow players to prepare for August practices.

Remember the counting of days tells us when we can actually begin practice. Just because we can doesn't mean we have to. Some schools can't begin at this date because of construction, budgeting, res life, or other random campus stuff. Don't confuse practice with move in day. Some places allow the athletes to move in prior to the first practice and have workshops or other programming from the athletics department and res life/campus safety peeps. I know the by laws are a pain, but it's actually simple if you look at a calendar when you figure it out.

Everyone knows that summer workouts and open gyms allow players to prepare for August practices. If that were the case, schools on quarters (that usually don't start class until mid-September) would get considerably more practice time than schools with early start dates. What the earliest college start date this year? I think the vast majority begin August 25th.

The biggest differences has to do with when their first matches are, as well as when the school starts class. also, counting back, if you have one or two units left on that earliest day, you may start practice. so, 3 practice days difference could be a week earlier starting school....(2 + 2 + 1)

Everyone knows that summer workouts and open gyms allow players to prepare for August practices. A) Georgia Tech starts classes August 18. Oregon St starts classes on September 29. There is no way you can have a universal start date without punishing the schools who start school sooner. B) Not every DI school has summer workouts. Heck, not every DI school has a full preseason. The NCAA has been encouraging schools to have a "climitization period" for all fall sports which is something that has been good for football, where the athletes have a few days to adjust, phasing in weights, then helmets, then double sessions, then pads... or something like that. So it wouldn't shock me if some schools were doing this on their own.

Apply Bylaw 17.24.2 9/1-1 8/31-Sunday 8/30-2 8/29-3 Apply Bylaw 17.02.11 8/28-4 8/27-5 8/26-6 8/25-7 8/24-Sunday 8/23-8 8/22-9 "week" over 17.02.11.2 ("week" 6 days not sundays prior to contest) count by 2 8/21-10,11 8/20-12,13 8/19-14,15 8/18-16,17 8/17-Sunday 8/16-18,19 8/15-20,21 8/14-22,23 8/13-24,25 8/12-26,27 8/11-28,29 First Permissible day of Preseason They can report earlier for strength and conditioning testing administered by the S/C coach, physicals, IMPACT testing, and NCAA paperwork and briefings. Depending on the staffing levels this may take 2-3 days to get all of the fall athletes taken care of. So this is also a good time for team meetings.
