So is the texting allowed? Snap chat? I think it sounds crazy but a DI HC told this to a recruit. It does sound crazy. For what good reason would a coach or recruit need to snap chat each other? Sounds like a door that doesn't need to be opened...

In my opinion, no rules need to be loosened regarding contact with players. Even with club, jr/high and high school coaches as the middle men, forwarded emails can get overwhelming. Thankfully, our coaches filtered out those that were obviously never going to be considered and only sent important ones. With text-at-will (or even worse, direct phone calls), there would be no such filtering. It's hard to imagine how crazy it could be if a top recruit chose to commit late and have this going on. They are, after all, STUDENT athletes. That said, most commit by sophomore year anyway, which negates this texting rule, aside from the coach to whom they selected to give that verbal commitment. I firmly believe the biggest reason many commit this early is to STOP the constant forwarded email and requested phone communications. As for Snapchat, really?!? Why would any coach use that with a player? To try and deem themselves as cool? There's no reason, nor occasion that I can come up with, for that to be in any way acceptable, and I know Snapchat. Glad my DD is past this.

What I do like is it will make communication easier around unofficial visits, and should help recruits learn more about schools and programs.

And no, most do not commit by sophomore year. Not even close. I think that number is probably 10% or less that commit by sophomore year. And anyone does not have be bombarded by this constant communication. All a player has to do is tell a coach she isn't interested. Or please contact me by e-mail or phone or whatever.

These are on court playing rules. To find anything about recruiting and/or texting, you need to look in the appropriate NCAA By-Laws for that division.

The Viber app provides free texting and free phone calls. If the "service" is free you're the product being sold.

Isn't preventing phones from exploding with text messages as simple as the recruit not giving her cell phone number to coaches?
