Just curious, what leads you to say this about Whitney? Did you see her play in HS? Seeing her in practice or offseason matches? She hasn't played much meaningful time at PSU. I hope Whitney gets it because I think she is a phenomenal player who could break out, but she has stiff competition. RS

I agree on the idea that every position is open this year. Russ Rose doesn't hand a position to anyone, if he feels someone is better, he'll boot the starter. In the past he has benched Kate Price (who was Big Ten FOY on the outside), Melissa Walbridge (2nd Team All-American middle), Fatima Balza (Championship starting middle), Kristin Carpenter (set team to National Title) and probably others I cannot think of. This Penn State lineup is absolutely stacked with talent. The only positions that I think are truly safe are Hancock as a setter and Gonzalez as libero. How the rest of it shakes out remains to be seen, but if you look at the depth chart you have: Setters: Hancock Weiskircher Outsides: Courtney Lee Frantti Prieto Reed Opposites: Whitney Middles: Grant Washington Thelen DS/Libero: Gonzalez Dykstra Fuller many others Setting will be Hancock. Outside I'm guessing will be Courtney and one of the other 3. Frantti skill wise is ahead of Lee, but people are awfully high on Simone. Then there is Paulina who saw limited minutes last year. My guess is Courtney and Frantti by midseason. Wouldn't be stunned if one of the odd women out between Reed/Prieto/Lee/Frantti winds up transferring. Middles--Washington should have it locked up, and Reed was a starter last year so I think she'll get it again this year. Opposite I'd lean towards Whitney but think Lee or Reed could be a great fit here as both are high flying players that could put up a big RS block. I hope Whitney gets it because I think she is a phenomenal player who could break out, but she has stiff competition. RS A little modification (note multiple position depth) Of course this is apt to change as the roster shakes out, experience gained and confidence earned. Best guess of top 3 to top 5 in each position. Setters: Hancock Weiskircher Gonzales L.Pierce Krause Outsides: Courtney Frantti Whitney Prieto Lee Middles: Grant Washington Thelen Whitney Robertson Opposites: Courtney Whitney Lee Prieto Reed Libero: Gonzales K. Pierce Fuller DS' s Fuller K.Pierce L.Pierce Caraway Muller Serving specialists: K.Pierce L.Pierce Caraway Muller Dykstra Yikes.

RS I saw a few matches from her freshman season---she did play in some big matches, had great showings against UCLA and Texas. She's a solid 6-5 OH with good length and is a good athlete. I think she has a very high ceiling in terms of potential. I know a few on this board were saying Whitney would be PSU's top pin hitter last season (which didn't happen) but now that she's an upperclassman and has a great chance to establish herself as a starter (last year was harder with Scott/Courtney/McClendon in front of her) I think she could solidify a spot on one of the pins and flourish with more playing time.

What happened to Prieto? Sorry in advance if I have missed the boat on a previous conversation about her. I noticed Dykstra took #9, and Paulina isn't on the 2014 roster.

I was just doing my 2014 sig pic and noticed that Prieto's pic was nowhere to be found. I have heard that she often struggles with homesickness, but I don't know if that is to be believed or if it has anything to do with her departure.

No inside info....just a great player and highly recruited (I would guess many top programs would be interested). Just surprised it didn't work out since she came early from high school when Russ doesn't necessarily encourage that.
