i don't care to do the research on that question, but I could also ask if there are many recent cases of a team from any conference making the tournament after going 0-7 against top 50 teams. The committee evaluates based on more than just RPI, otherwise there would be no committee.

And if Miami doesn't beat Pitt, how good is their case for making the tournament? If Pitt loses to Miami? Barring surprises in the other matches, the Pitt-Miami match may very well decide which school gets the 4th bid from the ACC. I do think 5 bids is still a possibility. I agree with you on this.. the Miami-Pitt match this Friday will answer the question.. who gets the 4th bid from the ACC.. It looks like Miami made changes in their back row... the transfer from Minnesota is no longer the libero--- looks like since the match vs. Wake Forrest..they have switched to a freshman.. Fernandez.... as new libero....

Anyone else feeling the Duke over Florida State upset tomorrow in Durham? Could it be that I am a little biased? Perhaps...
GO DUKE!!!

It's a very serious possibility. Duke essentially has its back against the wall and is playing at home. FSU is looking at 2 big matches on consecutive days, so the Thursday match could be a trap match for FSU. UNC and Duke are both very good teams, but you'd probably prepare for them very differently. Duke's strength is on the left. They're not a great blocking team, but a very good digging team. UNC's a bit more varied and their block does affect most opponents.
I'd still expect FSU to win, but Duke has a few factors running in its favor on Thursday, but they'll have to figure out how to neutralize Walch among other things.

I'm kinda of the mind that Walch is good enough that she'll get hers regardless. The key to beating FSU is slowing down Horton (when she's playing well, they're a REALLY good team) and the rights, and not letting the FSU block be a factor that lets them run points.

I will start a thread for the match FSU vs. Duke but for now I will comment that this match up is a huge one for both teams.
FSU will need this win to further lock their place atop the ACC and Duke needs this win to have any chance of ACC champion repeat...
Both teams will be ready and I believe both teams will bring their game...it will be a battle of the liberos in the back row vs battle of hitters across front.. where I think Duke has the advantage is that they are playing at home.. where I think FSU has the advantage is with their blocking...
I predict an FSU 3-1 win !

It looks like Miami will get an NCAA bid. Pitt was missing a key player and it probably affected the outcome. I don't think anyone would have expected that lopsided an outcome. The Miami vs. Florida State match now becomes much more important. A Miami win could take FSU out of the top 8, if that hasn't happened already. It would also bump Miami substantially upward.
I attended the UNC-FSU match. UNC played really well. FSU is a very good team which definitely wasn't playing badly. In the first match this year, Nelson wasn't much of a factor for UNC. In the second match Walch had some great kills, but also had a tough time in serve receive (after this week's matches, I think opponents will be serving at her a lot for the next few weeks) and had 8 hitting errors. Mosher also was less of a factor and had some problems passing as well. Nelson was very effective for UNC last night, but the most memorable plays didn't really involve her. Mcadoo went line on a set from the libero at 24-24 in the first set and caught FSU off guard. Neuenfeldt, the middle, executed a dump to the right corner in the fourth in a textbook example of what volleyball IQ looks like. McCorkle solo blocked Walch (I think) in the 4th set. Florida State repeatedly got kills on tips to the middle of the court near the ten foot line.
What I saw was two very physical teams who both made a number of very smart volleyball plays in the course of a match. That's what top ten teams do and that's what last night's match looked like.

The Heels are so athletic they will pose a problem for anyone they meet in the NCAA's. Hopefully they can keep up the momentum and close out the season on a high. They seem to be peaking at the right moment. That last-week matchup with arch-rival Duke looms large. Go 'Heels!!!!!!

Is anyone concerned that VOLLEYVOLLEYFAN has not been heard from. FSU #1 booster hasn't posted since prior to the match. Not like him not to comment. Any cliffs in Tally he could have jumped off of? VVF let us know you are alive and if not maybe not so well.

Probably a repeat of last year, with UNC, Duke, FSU, and Miami getting bids again. Perhaps maybe Pitt getting a bid too, given that there are now 16 teams this year - compared to 14 last year?

Oh right, maybe there'll just be 4 bids then.. even though traditionally stronger teams like Pitt and Louisville are now part of the conference.
