I watched the UNC-Clemson match and the Florida State-Miami match on TV this afternoon. Leaf, Miami's outstanding outside had a 30 kill match and both their outsides are really fun to watch. FSU, though is just a solid team all around. UNC really got tested by both Pitt and Clemson on the road. Chaniel Nelson had a great weekend, especially against Clemson. In the third set with Clemson ahead 23-18, UNC pretty much just kept getting the ball to Nelson and even though Clemson knew it was coming, their defense just didn't seem to have an answer. This is a very deep conference this year. I wouldn't assume anything over the next few weeks.

Does anyone know what has happened to Alexis Morning, Middle for Miami? Some people had her listed as Pre-season All ACC. I noticed she has not played a set this year and wondered if she was hurt. Was at match today in Miami.. Both players for Miami -Alexisis Mourning and Misy Ma'a were on sidelines.. Neither were dressed in uniform nor did either appear to be injured .... Anyone know what's up??? Mourning a senior was named all ACC pre conference too ...

Yeah, I'd guess Chaniel is going to be player of the week with 32 kills on over .400 hitting with an additional 10 blocks for UNC with two tough road wins. I hope these dangerous midle teams like Miami, Clemson and the Virginias don't jeopardize the top teams legitimate tourney chances.

I would like to see FSU libero, Mosher get ACC Player of the week this week.. she amassed 42 digs, 15 assists this weekend on the road vs. Ga Tech and Miami ( both very tough venues to play) Set an all time career high 34 digs today vs. Miami and All Time career assist high today with 9 assists vs. Miami.. also broke the All Time Total Career Digs Record at FSU today..this is ACC POW worthy in my book !! Would be great if ACC recognized players each week: Offensive Player of the Week Defensive Player of the Week like other conferences do.. i.e. Pac 12, Big, SEC. It's tough when only one player can get recognized each week in the ACC ..and only one Freshman..

The reason Mosher will never get too much recognition is that Duke has consistently had better liberos throughout her career and the FSU block is too big for Mosher to get significant dig totals. Even if there was a DPOW award, I don't think it would be going to Mosher very often since she has to compete with Claesen, Karelov and even McVey now.

One of those weeks where co-players of the week probably makes sense. Nelson was 32 kills and 12 blocks in 8 sets which is "how can she not be pow?', yet Mosher's case is just as good.

If you look at ACC only stats from last week . Mosher led the ACC in digs/set at 6.5 ... duke libero was ranked 3rd or 4th ... 2 weeks ago UNC libero got POW .. She had 21digs in 5 sets. And is not in the top 3 in conference....
So what this tells me. It's not only about having to lead ACC in digs/set that will get you POW .. It's impact to help team win on any given week.. You're right FSU is a tremendous blocking team so opportunity to dig is reduced with the big block... I would hope the voting committee takes all this into account when select All ACC teams and POW

And why would you look at conference only stats one week into the season, the sample size is miniscule. Karelov was better than Mosher this week. It's that simple. FSU got taken to 5 sets by a team that they shouldn't have, just because Mosher set the digs record does not mean she deserves POW as well. It's a moot point, this award should definitely be going to a hitter this week.

I used last week as example.. That's all ... I also was not inferring that Mosher breaking all time digs record is reason for POW I know you are very biased towards Duke and UNC .. That's fine .. I respect that.... I am a big FSU fan ...and am entitled to my opinion also... Many matches left in ACC.. We both will be watching closely.... In the end I trust best team will rise to top !!!

Here are the things you can look at in determining who had the best week: Team Wins (in a big conference like the ACC with just two awards, you have to go undefeated) Competition Level (@miami and gt = @pitt and @clem > @uva and @notre dame) Indvidual Stats (for Liberos, all that is relevant is dps, receiving %, service) Karelov and Mosher were equal on receiving and service ace/error, but Karelov had an extra dig per set and her team lost one less set. If Mosher deserves POW, she should at least be the best Libero in the conference for the given week. The reason you think she should be POW is because she set personal records and acte as a leader for her team. These should not factor into POW discussions. Also, don't compare your bias to mine, you post incessantly about one specific team. I go to NC State, UNC and Duke matches equally and have very little preference in the conference. I just know more about these players because I watch them more However, I've also seen every team in the conference (other than Notre Dame and Louisville) at least once in the past two years, so I'd consider myself rather unbiased.

Different matches, opponents, I guess it depends on who the coach nominates. I think I read last year each coach nominates a player each week. Totally agree ACC should have Offensive, Defensive winners each week, spread the wealth.

It looks like Nelson got the nod for player of the week. I hope that Mosher and Karelov get their turns as well, but just not during a week when their teams play UNC.
Has any setter in a 6-2 ever been player of the week? It's actually interesting to me that liberos are getting recognized as much as they are. On the other hand, Nelson's off the court half the time and doesn't serve. I think some people thought that the libero rule would create more of a role for a likely smaller player, but my sense is that what it really did is make it easier to play front row players who didn't have to pass/serve/ or play floor defense (as opposed to blocking). My guess is that it also made the 6-2 a much more viable option.
Anyway, big congratulations to Chaniel Nelson! Miami's setter was freshman of the week by the way, which may further aggravate VVF. I do think that one big factor in Nelson's week wasn't how many (though she did really well in that area), but when. She got a lot of very big kills in both matches at pivotal moments in the sets. It's harder to get a sense of when a libero does that without watching the match, because they generally only end points when serving or making a mistake.

The media office doesn't see "when" on a box score. Nor do they see leadership on a box score. These awards are based on numbers, unless the ACC media office has time to watch every singe one of the matches. The All-ACC will show us more who the coaches respect, but these POW awards are basically just a congratulations to the player who had the biggest numbers the week prior

I don't know if the media office looks at it, but it's now quite easy to get the point by point log (doubt that they have the time to study it), but the "when" is something you can look at with a hitter. As someone who watched the match on television, the "when" of Nelson's kills/blocks was a pretty big deal in the Clemson match. When UNC needed a kill in that match and Nelson happened to be in the front row, she just kept coming up with one.
fwiw, we tend to talk as if it's a 3 team conference with FSU, Duke, and UNC, but Pitt is very good and Miami is clearly very dangerous. I haven't seen NC State, Louisville, etc. but there really aren't many or even any matches that are foregone conclusions this year in the ACC.
