Cal will be fine. Young, but too much talent to miss the dance. They'll finish 6th (+/- one spot) and cruise in. Arizona will struggle, having lost Croson, Magill, and a very good libero in Nicholson - with no comparable talent to replace them. UA will be sitting at home come tourney time.

The details are between her and U of A, but I wouldn't expect to see her playing either sport at Arizona going forward.

USC Kritza Nwanebu Bugg Scambray Benson USC, Stanford, Washington, Cal, Colorado, UCLA, ASU Yes, USC USC has to show me a backcourt before I can predict they will win the NC. Hagglund is gone and she got up a lot of balls for the Trojans. Add to that Bricio's ability to be shaky on serve receive, and the L2 being Ruddins or Gills, both of whom have never passed at this level, and I think USC will be prone to too many errors in the backcourt. I've seen quite a bit of Gillis, and I would say that passing/defending are easily her two strongest skills. USC will not lose much with her in the back row.

There are countless examples of freshman who have done it. And, I have no idea what "national championship level" means. Completely arbitrary.

Completely arbitrary. how is that arbitrary? at a national championship level (which the poster I was responding to said USC would be next year) it means consistent, at a high level, against top level teams...at a level high enough so that it's not a liability to win against any team. Good enough to withstand the serving onslaught Washington is going to bestow upon her....good enough to dig balls spiked by Eckerman to a settable area, THAT is national championship level. And there are countless examples of freshmen who play like this? hmmmm.....name me 5 freshmen OH's on a legit national championship quality team in the last 5 years who's backcourt play was at a level consistent enough to win a national title. even in the last 10 years I can think of only a handful of freshmen OH's who's backcourt skills were high level- Danielson, Larson, Barboza (though it was only part of the season), probably Hodge, Morrison, Deja.... I'm not saying that a freshmen CAN'T do it, but I certainly wouldn't count on any freshmen TO do it.

Here's six: Burgess, Howard, Reeves, Croson, Rolfzen, Courtney. That took me about 12 seconds to think of, so I'm gonna bet there's a ton more out there. And your point is totally off base-national championship level is so much more about attacking, serving and passing AS A TEAM than it is about 1 player's ability to dig in the back row. You can say ball control is unproven/might be a liability, but there's no mythical "national championship level" of defense. Ruddins or Gillis/Schmidt (who is really, really good by the way) will probably not be as good of a ball control-digging tandem in aggregate as Hagglund/Shaw, but they won't need to be. L2 and R2 are going to be much more terminal, I expect the team's serving to take a big step forward (particularly if they setter/middle sub in the 6-2), and Abercrombie might walk into the gym as the Trojans' best pin blocker in years. I'm not predicting the Trojans win it all (hello, Stanford!), but your reasons for disqualifying them don't make sense.

I forgot about Colorado; Ay2013 caught me with that omission.
Coach of year usually goes to very top tier team, I think; could be wrong, so I don't think Klizma as Colorado won't be top three, which should give us COY.
NCAA bids should be down because a) I think league will be a bit more top heavy this year and b) results of getting 9 in last year were not corresponding to 3/4 of teams getting bids. That's technically not supposed to matter, but I think it does. Would be interesting to track results of conferences that get 5+ bids (SEC? WCC in other years?) and don't do well in tourney. Admit I could be all wet in that and need to define what is doing badly.
Cal will probably depend on two Frosh OH to contribute to passing, and if they can't, DS while they are in backrow. This hasn't worked that well as it leaves front bare on firepower, particularly when setter front row, but I guess they have little choice. Feller has been good at improving passing for OH, I believe, but that may not save this year.
If Croson is out at Arizona, just repeating gossip here, no insights at all, then Arizona is in trouble, although she, as a veteran, had real trouble hitting .200 in conference matches and may not be that great a loss, (though she does defend and serve well.)

She hit .129 in conference, wasn't as effective serving as she should be, and even her passing was pretty bad and she got yanked for a DS a few times. Great player at UH, but she just didn't perform well enough in the desert to be a significant loss.
