It is common that the Chinese players are made to have very short hair and no makeup, so that they do not attract male attention. They don't want the girls to have boyfriends. Short hair and no make up was the official policy under Mao. There are some regions where this attitude may still exist, but nowadays, female chinese athletes--and especially the more successful ones-- reject any such restrictions. When it's happening at the national team level, it's likely a function of pragmatism--less fuss and one less distraction.

P.S. As of this post Sabina's Instragram is at 39,006 followers. I'm curious to see how high it reaches in a week, a month, and a year from now. I made an error. The Sabina Instragram account with 39,006 followers was a fake! She doesn't have twitter. Her twitter account with over 21,000 followers is also a fake. The "Official" Sabina Instragram account has 231,974 followers. Wow.

If this thread turns into who's the hottest volleyball player you've ever seen, let me have my say. For me that would be Summer Altice. Objectify another, objectify another!! The hypocrisy of calling out someone for objectifying someone on a message board that's mostly about objectifying others boggles my mind. Truth is, people talk about other people. How smart, cute, dumb, talented, etc. If they're your child or you're their coach, or therapist, then I suppose it's not "objectification"... but if you're doing it for entertainment reasons, then I guess it is? People come on this board and post things with little to no regard for the feelings of those they're posting about, that's not "objectification"? This is just political correctness that seeks to mute and control those whose mind-set doesn't fit into a norm. What that "norm" is, someone should post a manifesto. I suppose part of it is that "women shall not be considered attractive", but if they're pre-med obsessively studious or four-sport muscle-bound, then that's OK to objectify them over? How about this- we bring up what we want to talk about and if it crosses a "normal" line like posting their phone number, then a "normal" moderator shuts it down. p.s.- whether asking why someone died is "normal" or not, I apparently don't have that one dialed in...

I say this as a massive anime and manga fan... The Japanese have issues with moe-ifying real-life figures and... things. I mean, there has to be a bajillion drawings of the Ukranian Inspector General or whatever that one woman's position is (she's a fairly attractive blonde woman high up in Ukraine's military or police force or something). So, something like that would only be surprising if it didn't exist.

Wow, this is getting out of hand. The story appeared on Huffington Post today. Non-volleyball people must think we're nuts.

[quote author=" NebraskaVBfan93" P.S. The over/under for when this thread gets locked? 2 pages. I'll take under. [/quote] Still here Bro. It's an interesting story that extends into society. You and I may not get it but we are of another culture.

The reason I wrote what I did was that I had anticipated this turning into a "Who is the prettiest volleyball player out there?" discussion. Needless to,say, I am pleasantly surprised it hasn't, yet.

Actually, I think this is an issue in American society as well. Recently a dentist/doctor (can't remember) fired an assistant because she was too pretty and he would be tempted. She sued for unlawful termination and he won. Sorry but that is crazy. But there are plenty of men and women who believe if a female is beautiful it is her fault, she is dumb, etc. Take your pick.

Your "fault" statement is one that permeates throughout history. Being attractive can open many doors but can often close some or cause offshoot issues.

My thought if he is tempted by a pretty woman, then the marriage might be suspect. But I digress. I think in general, volleyball girls are pretty. They have some of the characteristics which we as a society have said make one beautiful, athletic, tall, thin, etc. I also think many are smart. Just look at the NCAA reports and volleyball as a sport typically has higher GPAs than other sports. Comments about a player being too beautiful are worrisome.

If her coach thinks she's "too attractive" he knows nothing about marketing. Quite a few women are watching the NFL because of Tom Brady, and all those attractive blonde women's tennis players from Russia have helped that sport get bigger TV numbers. If the fans are only there to watch her, who cares? They're there and they wouldn't be otherwise.

Since I can't read Kazhak, I am wondering what the original article actually says. I suspect it was something along the lines of "Coach upset because Taiwanese fans that were only there to cheer for one player because of her looks. It is a distraction." and foreign news sites turned it into [Picture of photogenic woman] *click bait headline about woman being "too Pretty"*
