Today would have been Flo Hyman's 60th. Cool video, definitely ahead of her time. How about the standing topspin roundhouse serve; don't see that anymore. How many current or former collegiate coaches can you name playing for the USA in this video ?

I always thought she and Wilt the Stilt should have had a few children together. If you believe Wilt, he slept with approximately 20,000 women. Chances are, there might be a lot of people carrying a portion of Wilt's DNA.

The last time I saw Wilt was at a college volleyball match.

One of the most enduring memories I have of Flo Hyman is on a videotape I got from the USA Volleyball video vault years ago. It was the NBC broadcast of the 1984 Olympic Finals minus any of the commentary by the announcers, which the USA lost to China and Lang Ping. Many of those on the team (Flo Hyman included) had waited 8 years for the chance at a gold medal, after the 1980 boycott, only to fall just short.
Post-match, several of the USA women were looking pretty distraught. You can hear Flo rallying her teammates together in the post-match huddle and telling them "Great job!" and "You guys were terrific!" and basically keeping everyone together after such a tough loss. I don't remember seeing that live when I watched the match, I think either NBC cut away as soon as the match ended or the announcers were talking over the post-match activity. EIther way, this video I have you can hear the team interaction crystal clear, and hearing Flo Hyman bringing her team together at the end like that really tugs at my heart everytime I watch it. She passed away a short 2 years later. She was an amazing ambassador for our sport.

Those memories must not be that enduring, ABC had the broadcast rights for the 1984 games, not NBC.

Those memories must not be that enduring, ABC had the broadcast rights for the 1984 games, not NBC. Well, heck, it's been 30 years. My memory is not so good anymore. Musta been the last time anybody but NBC had the contract to cover the Olympics, we've been putting up with Bob Costas for decades now.
ABC did have some good sports coverage back in the 70's and 80's. I remember "Battle of the Network Stars" and I think me and my dad even watched the Thrilla in Manilla fight (delayed several weeks, of course, no PPV back then) between Muhammed Ali and Ken Norton on ABC's Wide World of Sports.
