SC beats GA Tech in four, which is a good win for them. GA Tech isn't strong, but beating a power conference team, no matter how weak, in pre-conference play will be good for the Gamecocks' mentality.

Good results: Florida, Arkansas, Kentucky, Alabama
Good results, considering: Ole Miss, South Carolina
Mixed results: TAMU, Tennessee, Auburn, Georgia (though I'd move this to Bad results if they lose to USF - they are down 2-1)
Bad results/Good competition: LSU
Bad results: Miss State, Missouri

A rebuilding year for the Bulldogs.

Good comeback in Game 4 falls short for UGA, and they go down to U San Francisco. So I'd officially transfer them to the "bad results" column.

A rebuilding year for the Bulldogs. Probably an obvious observation, but 4 (Florida, Arkansas, Kentucky, South Carolina) of the 6 teams that had 'good results' were playing in the friendly confines of their own gyms. Mixed/bad results had 6 of 7 teams playing on the road, with Georgia traveling the farthest to play in California. TAMU was the only team that didn't seem to capitalize on their home court advantage by dropping the match to UTSA.

Passing and lack of production from the outside hitting position is what caused Aggie downfall. Also the outside for UTSA cased them fits and IMO was the true MVP of the tourney. Aggies win the tourney due to sets percentage but I don't think that is of much comfort right now. Gave away set one at the end. If the trend continues with the passing of the outsides and lack of attack attempts out of middle back, there may have to be some DS replacements for outsides if someone on roster can pass consistently

A few quick observations on the Vols from this weekend.
Bryant - Has a huge upside potential. A very strong blocker, but her inexperience showed during the App State game when going up against the faster offense. I think you will see her progress quickly throughout the season and really be a force as an upperclassman.
Dempsey - Looked improved from last year but wouldve liked to see her run the middle more often when the pass was in system (note, that couldve been coaches call)
Villano - Got the start as libero and did a very solid job. Consistent serve receive and had some nice athletic plays on defense. Another player that I think will grow in her position over the season and be a strong performer in years to come. (note, she and Bryant were the two players that made the All-Tournament team)
Bawcombe - Had minimal playing time but took some nice swings. Could compete with Mariani down the road for the starting position.
Coco - Good defensive plays but struggled on serve receive.
Lea - Came out the gate quick this weekend looking very strong but needs to show more consistency and not be afraid to swing on out of system balls.
Jimenez - I really liked her play. She had some serve receive issues along with all the other OH's, but shes a smart player who is not afraid to swing and hustles on defense.
Hembry & Mariani - Both a little hot & cold this weekend.
The team has a ton of potential, but like all posters know is young and will struggle with the more experienced teams. If they can gain confidence during some of the OOC matches and learn quickly, they have the ability to provide an upset or two during the year. But they definitely have work to do.

OK, I've avoided saying this for awhile now, because I was afraid people would mistakenly take my words to be mean spirited, but I'll just suck it up and deal with the consequences later: Hazelwood's MSU alumni status can no longer be used to keep her at the helm of the Bulldogs.
2013: Overall record: 12-20 Conf: 3-15 2012: Overall record: 4-25 Conf: 0-20 2011: Overall record: 12-17 Conf: 7-13 2010: Overall record: 11-20 Conf: 3-17 etc. You get the point.
This season they've already gotten swept by Bakersfield and Monroe and also lost to Sam Houston State.
I don't know...maybe it is not totally her fault. Mississippi is not exactly a volleyball hotbed and Starkville and The Barn are not exactly good selling points to recruits. BUT then again, the SEC isn't that tough of a conference to play .500 volleyball in. And the non-conference RPI's of the schools they lose to is embarrassing. I understand volleyball is not high on the totem poll at MSU and they like to how loyalty but you also have to promote the idea of wanting progress.

I understand volleyball is not high on the totem poll at MSU and they like to how loyalty but you also have to promote the idea of wanting progress. They had some good players last year, just not a complete team. The good players all left the program. You can't build a program if you can't keep your best players in the program. MSU has had more player turnover than Tennessee. I am a MSU alumnus and I am embarrassed by their volleyball performance. My DD was a top 40 prep volleyball Senior Ace and had played on the USA Volleyball YNT. We went to MSU for an unofficial visit and were treated like lepers. They knew nothing about her or her potential. By far the worst visit we ever had. I've also talked to players that have left the program. Their issue is twofold. Coaching and the Athletic Department share the fault. Its obvious a change needs to be made but the AD refuses to do so. Nothing will improve until a change is made.
