Everyone seems to be mad on here about the rankings, so I feel pressure to be mad as well.... Minnesota at #12? Are you kidding? They deserved to be at least 11th. An outrage!! With Santana and Nora replacing Dixon and Wittman, and almost 250 of last years sets played transferring, moving up to 11th, thus 5th in the B1G according to this poll might be a stretch. Gopher's would be lucky to finish 6th in conference and still earn a home seeding. Didn't they begin last year at 4? I'm thinking a six position slide to 18th is very much in their cards. Wisky had a fortuitous loss to Minnie. If Wisky wins that on the road they just might have had to go to Kentucky having Standford and PSU in front of them. Should that have happened a 6th or 7th ranking today is quite respectable. IMO the Champs are the Champs until they lose! They earned the title and deserve the respect.

Coach Shoji is the winningest coach in Women's D-1 VB. Very impressive!

The team that won the championship isn't returning. Players left/graduated. It'd make sense if the exact same roster was returning, but it's not. Those specific players won the title, the school and jersey did not.

Not at all, most coaches I know are first to step in line and hand out respect to their fellow competitors, not sit around weighing whose graduating and whose reterning. The test under fire will soon begin and all will be revealed, they all know that. Until then, credit is given where credit is deserved.

My Wahine are a bit low but that`s okay because they have a lot of freshman and inexperienced players coming in that need to fill some shoes. Curious to see what Dave can do with these girls and how far they can go this season.
GO BOWS!!!

This is the first poll of the 2014 season, not the last of the 2013 season.

GO BOWS!!! they actually are ranked higher in the preseason poll than they were in the 2013 final season poll, which is actually a credit to the program, considering they lost their leading scorer, most of their backcourt, and their setter...and nobody on the roster to replace them are anywhere near as good as Hartong, Uiato, and Longo.

My first thought when I saw the top spots on the poll was that Russ Rose is really not going to like it. Wisconsin is first in my heart, but I would have put them sixth if I were voting in this poll, behind the teams ahead of them in it. I think Hawaii being as high as they are is a nod to the program and Shoji, because they really don't have a lot of proven talent coming back, especially with Vorster leaving.

I am as big a PSU fan as there is on this site, and I find them being #1 absurd. I know what you mean, but somebody has to be number 1. In most years, it makes sense that the team that just won last December picks up most of those votes. I also think Washington is a little too high considering they will be needing a new libero and either a new setter or a new offensive system. They also lose their best-blocking OH. (The do have some great players coming back, though, so definitely top-10.)

Ok, all of last year on this board UW was Washington and now it's Wisconsin. Let's settle on something, how about it (made all the more confusing when a Washington poster is talking about the Badgers). Nebraska should be above Wisconsin. That's my only 2 cents. "UW" is always Washington, except when it's not. It will get really interesting when they play in Sept.

I agree. That's a lot of offense & defense to make up. Don't get me wrong, this team will go through some growing pains. They're young, and at this point....no one knows how good they are.

We got Olivia Magill for that, who IMO, is an upgrade from jade. Don't get me wrong, I'll miss seeing jade play, but I rarely saw her hit the ball like a dominant middle. She scored points because of her unconventional whiffs and it threw opponents off guard.

I can't disagree, but on the other hand, isn't this also the only time of the season when every team is truely tied for first? How one wins and against whom will happen soon enough.

I think it makes sense that the team who won last year picks up the votes because they return the most players of the top finishing teams last year. Psu does not. Slay, McClendon and Scott were all Americans who are being replaced by players we have no idea how they will perform.
