Not sure they were offered but MN was interested in both. Problem is that MN saw Goehner as a libero/DS and Goehner wanted to play OH. Ironic, isn't it. MN had Taylr McNeil committed, too, when Goehner made her choice of Marquette. FYI - how many teams have their libero take swings from the left side during warm-ups? I also believe that MN wanted Dimke as a hitter vs. a setter. Dimke wants to set in college and Purdue is giving her that opportunity. They wanted Dimke as a RS, which is why she chose Purdue. Also, it's kind of cool, huh? We have one of the best hitting liberos in the country! Our libero sliced and diced her way through SPVB 18-1s just last spring! I seriously hope she gets a chance to hit at some point in her career here though. It'd be a treat to watch. And regarding Handley, she has the train rolling! I'm really happy with what she's been doing. She's proven she's the girl going forward. However next year, I still think its SSS's job. Remember just a few years ago Sam was setting the 18-1s while Handley was a reserve. When did the NL 181 play SPRY?

Really competitive match all around. SSS completely had her way that match. Stuffed Nebraska freshmen Annika Albrecht and Maddie Haggerty a few times too.

the Rochester tournament was a scrimmage in December I believe. SPRY won 18-1 AAU Open National Championship in June

You're probably right, but I remember Lights won a close match. Of course, later that summer Sports Performance was unstoppable amd won at Nationals. But the Nebraska recruits sure had a hard time figuring out Sam in that early season match/scrimmage/whatever you may call it.

Remember just a few years ago Sam was setting the 18-1s while Handley was a reserve. SSS was also the coaches daughter, so I don't think Handley got a chance to play. The big thing for me is that Handley will have 2 years of D1 setting experience by the time SSS comes in. Although, I heard SSS was enrolling early, so maybe she will catch up fast.

It brings up an interesting question. When's the last time a big Northern Lights recruit chose a school besides Minnesota? Wilhite, Goehner, Paige, Hannah (yes, separate recruitments in fact), Wittman, Dixon all became Gophers. Is Molly Kreklow all?? OH Kylee Zumach (Buffalo, MN) is a freshman at Kansas State (9-1) and currently leads them in kills and has already garnered a Big12 Rookie of the Week honor.

She's doing great with Kansas State. Minnesota didn't come after her heavily though. Didn't get an offer.

Glad K-State is working out.

looks like Goehner had a chance to hit early today with 10 attempts and Rosado is back at Libero. Did anyone see the match to confirm ? Did Rosado fix her serve receive?

This was done for the third set of the match only, presumably to give Daly a bit of a rest, see how Rosado would do, and see Goehner on the outside while still expecting to win the set. (I don't think they'd have made this change were they playing a tougher opponent, I mean.)

The move was made, but it's not absolutely not a permanent thing. It was done experimentally because the match was already in hand. Goehner had a small handful of kills in her time at OH too.

"It's not absolutely not a permanent thing"? That's way too hard for me to decipher. * The Gophers cannot offer to every single good Minnesota player. They need to get the great ones. But they also need to land some non-Minnesota kids. Looks like that is starting to happen? *Although, reading it literally, I disagree. There's no way Goehner is now, in the middle of a match against Duquesne, replacing Santana (or Wilhite) permanently.

Although I'm glad Goehner got to play the OH in garbage time today. (No such thing as garbage time, I know..)

I am curious as to how some other Minnesota fans are viewing this team and its progress at this point in the middle of the season. Feel free to chime in!
My two cents, for bored souls to read:
For me (and, I am guessing, for many others), the biggest surprise has been Paige Tapp. Not a super hard hitter, but still a beast at the net. It's occasionally clear that she is a younger player, but she has been doing a great job overall at making small improvements in various spots of her game. She's a player that is worth more than the sum of her parts. Some differences are starting to develop between her and Hannah, which I did not really expect. Hannah is a much harder hitter (and server) and appears a little more composed in certain plays - running a slide, for instance. However, Paige has been much more efficient overall as an attacker, for whatever reason. It appears that she plays with more levity and sometimes appears more relaxed than her twin, who has much more experience. She also seems to have slightly better blocking instincts (maybe?) and is a tad better at dealing with overpasses. Either way, both are great. Blocking is what is carrying this team.
What surprises me most elsewhere has been our passing, particularly our ability to dig attacks. Maybe my expectations were set too high, but with names coming in like Alyssa Goehner and Dalianliz Rosado, who could blame me? I'm not disappointed in any way in our passing, but it's our Achilles Heel, and I honestly did not think it would be. It does seem like our entire back line is making gradual improvements with each match, particularly with body placement and reaction times. Our passing can be good, but we need to get to the ball. Dalianliz has all the right moves for being a great libero once she gets comfortable with being on the court in high pressure situations. Alyssa is great but certain aspects of her platform could be improved. Passing is still an issue, but her serve receive looks pretty nice.
Setting does not strike me as quite the issue that some others do, but certain aspects could definitely be improved (*cough* out of systems *cough*). It's actually really cool to see the differences developing between our two setters that were not apparent at the start of the season. Katie Schau, who seems to be the preferred choice for the coaches most of the time, is likely more athletic, quicker reacting, and a bit better defensively. The quality of her sets seem to decline over the span of a longer and hotly contested match, however. She plays with more energy than Erica Handley, but is also more prone to being affected by negative momentum shifts in the match, it seems. Erica seems to play with more of an even-keel, yet she still brings a lot to the court. She has better looking sets for the most part and might be a tad better at involving our middles and all players equally. Also, her sets sometimes seem better concealed to the opposing team, although maybe it's just me. The two setters really complement each other quite well, and there is really no real downfall to using either.
What happened to the Adrianna Nora of last year? Yeah, we've been out of system a fair number of times, and our setters are still trying to get comfortable with setting RS - I get that. Still, I miss the fire that we so often saw from her last year. Tipping just does not work for anyone on this team. It just doesn't. Adrianna always seemed to perform best when coming in off the bench during tight point situations - brought in a ton of energy with her. Could it be a conditioning issue? Not sure. I still love her as a player; she can be so explosive and lethal. She is the hardest hitter on the team when she gets a clean hit. Just glad that we are willing to experiment with Maddie Beal and others on the RS when things are just not clicking.
One other regular of last year that I would like to see on the court more is Morgan Bohl. I really liked her as a libero the past couple years, despite the naysayers. She is not lightning quick, but she is quite fit at this point, it seems. I wonder how her knee is doing. With our passing woes this season from so many younger players on the court, could it really hurt to have her on the court more often in place of another? (Waiting for the smart-aleck to say "yes.") She would bring us plenty of D1 experience in the passing department. I really wish we could utilize her occasionally as a hitter, but not sure if her vertical and blocking ability is quite back to where it could be. The coaches have their reasons for playing the players that they play, however.
I'm a little disappointed that Daly is carrying so much of the offensive workload, particularly as of late. I wish Sarah Wilhite could play with more fire on a regular basis and try to avoid tipping, even if sets to her are not perfect. It would be nice to have another consistent outside (Goehner?), but we are just very lacking in personnel at this point. I'd like to see Goehner play a complete match at OH2 just to see what kind of things happen. Are we comfortable with the rest of our regular back row players to try that? I'm a little shaky on that idea right now.
Overall, the team is playing to their level. It is frustrating, as a fairly novice player of the sport, to see little errors and mental mistakes hounding us and ultimately holding the team back. (Why can't we close out a set?!) To be able to convincingly win a few sets in a row this coming weekend should hopefully help out the team's morale and outlook. I really do think we have the right pieces on the team to make good things happen late this season and definitely next season.

I'm not following the team as closely this year, but I do find the Adri nay Sayers puzzling because, she has the pinhitters highest B1G season hitting%. If my research is correct Daly is .124 52 30 176; Sarah .106 36 21 141 (btw she hit .303 10 0 33 against NU); Adri .215 23 9 65. Looking at it this way Adri is +14pts; Sarah +15pts; Daly +18pts; it's seems to me that the right is doing her job better than the other OH's? I recall Shau not setting the right much at all during her stint setting the 6-2 the last 7 matches of the season last year, maybe when the pressure and tempo increases setting right is simply out of her wheelhouse?
