My DD had Aame as a coach in JO's. What a great coach, person and a class act. I wish him well in his future endeavors.

www.msumavericks.com/news/2014/11/12/WVB_1112142450.aspxNot exactly related to the 2014 Gophers team, but some Gopher connections nonetheless: Dennis "Aame" Amundson, head coach of the MSU-Mankato Mavericks volleyball team is retiring at the end of this school year. I went to MSU during his coaching tenure there but honestly wasn't overly familiar with him then. However, one of my high school classmates played outside hitter for him and really enjoyed her time there. His sense of, erhem, fashion along with his wacky sense of humor always seemed to strike a chord with the team. I was definitely impressed with his unique coaching style based upon my limited knowledge and understanding at the time. It will be interesting to see who they bring in next! This has always been a fun team for me to follow -- gotta love a little DII volleyball every now and then to mix things up a bit. I've been to Mankato twice for a running race and both times the Mavericks were playing at home and I got to see a bit of it. Nice facility, solid team over the years. And when I was there last month the gobuckys got some Minnesota State gear just for fun!

due to the number of sophomore/freshmen starting right now and how much better the team is looking, plus the addition of SSS next year, the team is looking to having a bright future instead of falling into the obscure years everyone here was talking about.

So, I was asking a question over on the Wisconsin 2014 thread about the 2015 recruits and how for the second straight year there would be no Wisconsin corn-fed kids (ok, I didn't say corn-fed). Back 8 or so years ago Milwaukee Sting was a big feeder to the Wisconsin program, but looking at the current list, only one kid, Lauren Litzau, is heading to a big time program anywhere. What you experts know about her? Nothing jumped out at me in a brief search.

Has the Hagerty family run out of daughters? I don't know how you define "big time," but is it really the case that no Wisconsin HS player is heading to any, let's say, tournament level team?

I remember when Mike took his team to Japan. They got smoked. I'm sure it will be beneficial, unless they're hoping to work on their confidence.
Would SSS go on this trip if enrolled early? I assume so?

With MN firmly on a thin bubble, I wonder if Hugh re-thinks his OOC schedule going forward. A projected RPI of 55 could be the team's undoing when it comes the selection committee. While Pablo shows that the B1G is 3rd strongest conference, I have to believe their overall RPI is greatly weakened by the addition of Maryland (151) and, particularly, Rutgers (184). Even perennial doormat Iowa has improved to 95 and I feel they will become stronger over the next few years.
Teams with a stronger RPI than MN include Lipscomb, Arkansas-Little Rock, and Central Florida.
In my opinion, MN will need to schedule stronger in years to come.

Tricky this year, however. A 6-5 pre-season record would put them at 15-16 if they split the last 2 matches.

Tricky this year, however. A 6-5 pre-season record would put them at 15-16 if they split the last 2 matches. They were 10-1 in non-conference. I'm not saying schedule 8 matches against top 20 teams. But, had they played 3 anticipated top 20 teams and lost them all, they would have had a 7-4 non-conference record which would have them at 15-14 now. Still would need to go 1-1 to qualify for the tournament at 16-15. But, they could go 1-1 this week for a 19-12 record and miss the tournament. Meanwhile, USC could go 1-1, finish at 15-15 and make the tourney. Which would be better? It seems paradoxical that if you don't feel you will have a strong B1G season that you need to schedule tougher OOC. Scheduling soft in OOC in order to ensure having a .500 plus overall record and not having a strong B1G season will likely not get you into the tournament. The tricky part is knowing how those anticipated "tougher" teams will fare. I'm sure that MN anticipated Louisville having a better year.

USC could also go 0-2 and not be eligible.
Minnesota needed one of their two road tournaments to be tougher. But they lost to Louisville and almost lost to Boston College. I'm not sure how well they would have done.
Beating Indiana and/or Northwestern on the road would have helped, too.

Here's the other thing. They may have just been unlucky. Yale had a 45 RPI in 2013. Louisville 40, Tulsa 37, Milwaukee 77, Duquesne 90, Toledo 106.
Almost every opponent dropped for 2014.
