First day of competition is August 29th, but which match will be the very first one? I have South Florida @ No. 8 Purdue at 10:00 AM ET.

Why did the start of the 2014 season get pushed one week later than the last several seasons?

Why did the start of the 2014 season get pushed one week later than the last several seasons? 17.24.3 First Date of Competition - Women. A member institution shall not engage in its first date of competition (game or scrimmage) with outside competition in women's volleyball until the Friday prior to September 1. If September 1 falls on a Friday, the first permissible date of competition shall be the preceding Friday. If September 1 falls on a Saturday, the first permissible date of competition shall be two Fridays prior to September 1. An alumni match may be played during the week (Saturday-Friday) prior to the first permissible date of competition. Thus, the first competition date is always the Friday that falls between August 24th and August 30th.

I believe that NAIA schools start Aug.20, 2014. Indiana University East plays Judson University at 7:00 tonight.

www.viterboathletics.com/schedule/0/11.phpIt seems like some NAIA schools started as early as August 12; check out Vitterbo's (La Crosse, WI) 2014 schedule. They've opened the season with a 6-0 road trip including wins over several ranked So. California schools (including last year's NAIA finalist Biola). Note that the schedule does not annotate any of these matches as a scrimmage or an exhibition.

Ok, I'll bite. Give me a list of potential upsets on the 29tth between two ranked teams or a ranked team playing a decent opponent on the road?

Not a potential upset but Texas is playing New Mexico on the road in the Lobo classic that night. Texas should sweep but I could see it being close set scores and NM maybe able to steal a set. NM returns 6 starters from last season. Were picked to finish second in their conference and was on others receiving votes in the pre-season poll. They have 3rd Team AA Selection Chantale Riddle and return the 2013 MWC Freshman of the Year in Julia Warren. Texas I believe has too many big guns and should be able to overpower but it should be a good gauge for both teams to start the season. It will be the second game of the season for both teams as earlier in the day I believe Texas plays UTEP and NM plays Seattle U, who are also participating.

Not calling upsets, but IMO the most interesting matches of opening day: FSU @ Nebraska Iowa St. v. Stanford LBSU @ Illinois Ohio St. @ Oregon Wichita @ Kentucky San Diego v LSU San Diego @ Purdue

Mississippi plays Canisius in the Buffalo tournament at 10:00 AM ET too. I was reading through the messages and mentally placed this as a response to the message immediately preceding it - Hammer's question about upsets - and not in relation to what match was first. Made me question your sanity until I figured out I had the context wrong.

No. 14 San Diego vs. LSU sounds like a good candidate for an upset. LSU lost only one player from last season's NCAA tournament team. USD will be playing at 9:00 AM PT and will probably have to arrive even earlier than usual due to that morning's USF-Purdue match.
