Two former A-10 coaches square off:
BADGERS:
Second-year head coach Kelly Sheffield returns 11 letterwinners and six starters from last season’s NCAA runner-up team. Wisconsin brings back 98.4 percent of its kills, 85 percent of its aces, 99 percent of its blocks and 78.9 percent of its digs.
The Badgers lost only one senior to graduation—libero Annemarie Hickey—and also lost outside hitter Crystal Graff to a medical hardship while defensive specialists Victoria Ito and Claire Raddatz decided not to return.
Hickey is the most significant loss as she led the team with 482 digs (3.95/set) and was one of the Badgers’ primary serve receivers.
BADGERS IN SEASON OPENERS
The Badgers are 27-13 all-time in season openers, including a 17-7 mark on the road. Wisconsin has won its last four season openers, including a 3-0 win over Iona at the Pep-perdine Classic in 2013.
LOUISVILLE
The Cardinals were 23-8 in 2013, losing to Marquette 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Louisville won the American Conference last season with an 18-0 mark but have moved to the ACC this season.
Fourth-year head coach Ann Kordes returns three starters and four letterwinners. She also brings in eight newcomers.
Sophomore Maya McClendon, a 5-9 outside hitter, is the Cardinals top returnee on offense and defense. She averaged 3.10 kills and 3.16 digs per set as a freshman. Sophomore Janelle Jenkins, a 5-11 outside hitter, added 2.28 kills per set last season. Junior Katie George, a 5-11 setter, ran the Louisville offense, putting up 9.31 assists per set in 2013. She also added 2.19 digs per set.
