Deme was a rock-star in her incredible role in helping the Badgers to the NCAA Championship match. She was so impressive all-season long. Remind me what Louisville did. Not about to be critical of Maya. That would be absurd. But trust me, Deme was the heart of Badger VB. To be clear: I'm not actually critical of Maya. She's a gifted player. It was more of a "two teams with undersized OHs" joke.

Maya is better than Deme in every area of the game. That's an incredibly broad statement, and not true. Morales is much better than McClendon at serve recieve Completely incorrect. Deme's worst skill, arguably, was her passing.

Your infactuation with Carlini and any setter from SPVB is obvious. If Wisconsin does not have all the injuries that forced Deme into the LS spot and to become a 6-rotation player, UW does not have the remarkable season that they did. Teams tried all season to take advantage of the smaller OH, but normally failed miserably and distored their own game in doing so. Carlini is wonderful. She was Wisconsin's best player. Deme was the heart of the team. As a novice VB fan, I like heart over talent. Not saying I'm in the norm, just sayin'.

The reason they were successful in the postseason is because they had incredible chemistry, served and defended out of their minds, got a good draw and had an incredible setter. To say the reason was Carlini is just a gross exaggeration and a failure to see all of the other great things that happened on top of Carlini's undeniable skill and great play. Wisconsin was probably the best "team" at the FF, and yes they had clearly one of the best players as well. The team was a bigger factor than just the player. Oganna may be the only single player I can think of where I could even dream of saying "their postseason was because of her" and I still wouldn't say that.

I was in the middle of writing something that I decided not to. In the meantime, Dorothy's post was the post I was trying to write.

I was in the middle of writing something that I decided not to. In the meantime, Dorothy's post was the post I was trying to write. I am totally on board with Pelc regarding how good Carlini is, and her contribution was enormous, but it wasn't "THE" reason. Wisconsin's success was a perfect storm, of new life breathed into a program that had talent, extraordinary chemistry, good fortune and a player who just put them over the top. You just don't do it with one player in this sport, I don't care who that player is.

I agree that they had a great draw, great team chemistry, and a great, fresh staff, but Deme certainly was not the determinant for the success in the postseason (like the poster was suggesting). If I have to pick one player to give that to, it's Carlini.

I agree with pelcj11. I will have to admit up front, I didn't watch every Wisconsin's game last season, 4 during the season and post season, but knowing somewhat about the sport, the Badgers did well because they had a very good setter who was able to make their hitters better. The team would not have been as good if the setter from the previous year was still setting.

So who will start? Will it be the same lineup we ended 2013 with. Will Fricano get the nod. I sure would like to see what she can produce.

McClendon had 38 receiving errors compared to Deme's 26, with 100 less serve receive attempts. Morales isn't a star or anything, but I think you're vastly overestimating McClendon.

Here's the best I can do: L1: Ellen L2: MB1: Dom MB2: Haleigh RS: S: LC L: Tay If Kriskova were healthy I'd say she's L2, but she's not. So do we go with Deme here, or get crazy and, I dunno, try Frick at the left? I'm leaning towards Court at RS. I don't think Bates starts at OH. Not yet.

But they don't have even nearly the same sort of season they had without Carlini IMO. I suppose I could say the same thing for the staff change too. But the poster was talking about specific players being "the reason." If we're picking one player that meant the most, it's Carlini.
