All teams suffer injuries during the year, and many in the pre-season workouts. But it seems to me Michigan more than many teams has a thin, inexperienced bench and can ill-afford them. Is anyone other than me worried about the stories out of Ann Arbor that several expected starters for Michigan are injured, a 5’8” L/DS might play out of position at OH, and Dannemiller won’t be playing, at least in the first game? Is there a possible upset in the making?

That said, I think that you have to lean on what the Wolverines have and that is a stout block, tremendous defense and enough offense to be very competitive this opening weekend. B1G play is a month away, and Coach Rosen doesn't seem to be at all interested in rushing back players that are recovering, even if it means being short handed. As for the 5'8" L/DS potentially playing at OH this weekend, it's not as if she has never played the position. On the club scene, she played as a 6-rotation OH and was a key weapon in the team competing in the Open division, winning a bronze medal in Dallas in the 17's. Also, her California high school team won back to back Championships. Not saying she has the hops of Morales at Wisconsin, but that's a closer comparison than suggesting she is riding in her first rodeo.

Still, I wonder whether a 5'8" player even with good hops can get it done at the collegiate level. We'll see. And as for Michigan's "stout block," I hope you are right. I know blocking stats can be misleading and depend in part on whether the team philosophy is to block for kills or block for defence, but even with the taller players Michigan has had recently and on this year's team, they have never managed to be among the top blocking teams in the B1G. I think they finished 8th last year in team blocking. Perhaps having Cole back in the middle will help.

Cole is going to be unstoppable in the middle.

No truer words could be spoken, pelcj11. En Fuego. 18 or 19 kills on the day. Mahlke also chips in with 13 kills and fellow freshmen Knop and Lambert also contribute across the front row. Great day of setting for Carly Warner while Morales and Lerg capably patrolled the back row.
Michigan wins 3-1, pounding SFA 25-8 in the 4th set.

All Michigan fans hope this is a portent of good things to come. But, with no disrespect to Stephen F. Austin, this was a match against Stephen F. Austin, a team that blazed to a 16-16 record with an RPI ranking of 182 last year. I am surprised, frankly, that Michigan dropped a set! I am not sure we'll learn anything about this team until at least the match against Arkansas.

Based on the way Arkansas looked against Tennessee State, you still may not know much after that match.

Until Michigan has Dannemiller back, no one will know anything.

Well, we learned two things, I think. Cole is not completely unstoppable and the Michigan block is not as "stout" as the Arkansas block.

Yeah, Arkansas is going to live and die by the block this year. Tonight = life.

Charlesd- You are right that Cole is not unstoppable, as were the skeptics about the ability for Michigan to win this weekend. Arkansas won their tournament. Congrats to the Hawgs. That said, I'm fairly sure that Abby will succeed ,ore often than not this year and beyond. Additionally, I'm not sure that anyone anticipated the Wolverines playing the entire weekend without Dannemiller, Murphy and Davis, not to mention Zhou and Bulic dinged up. The three healthy freshmen played well for their first weekend on the college scene. Lambert, Mahlke and Knop all contributed. Kieffer-Wright will contribute significantly once she is able to return from a stress fracture. Next up: Duke and North Caroline at home. Let's see how the group does this coming weekend before traveling to the Oregons.

According to the broadcast, Dannemiller is not injured but being held out due to an "internal matter" (read: disciplinary) and would play next weekend against Duke. But the overall point that MI was short-handed is definitely valid.
