I don't see why we are having trouble blocking Schultz.

They will be better, maybe much better with Nwanebu. And their D and passing have got to improve. It is, as they say, a work in progress.

USC has all the weapons - Gillis went in a slump but leading USC in attempts is a good thing. She is seeing a lot of sets which will only make her better. Abercrombie hit .407 with 13 kills, while Ruddins struggled. With Gillis, Bricio, Nwanebu, and Abercrombie (or Ruddins) on the pins, along with USC being a strong serving team (Bricio, Ruddins, and Abercrombie have very good serves), USC is going to be able to score points. They just need the first and second contacts cleaned up a bit.
Gillis leads USC in Kills (15), Attempts(49), and Digs (16). She added 3.5 blocks as well. USC outblocked Pacific 21-13.5

Is the WCC underrated? LMU just knocked off UCLA in straight sets... Pepperdine and St. Mary's both had embarassing losses. I think this is just a preview of the WCC re-organizing itself rather than the conference getting stronger.

Anybody know why Nwanebu has been out this weekend and when she'll be back? Is it from that leg injury she sustained playing with the NT over the summer? Was wondering the same thing. Haven't seen anything yet saying why she wasn't on the court this season. Hope all is well with her, she's a game changer.

That is the key word - 'ESCAPE' I wish I could be at the practices in the week to come and see what Haley does about their passing and defense. We all know what a star Hagglund was the last four years and it CLEARLY shows. But I think everyone is seeing what a stud Sara Shaw was in the back row, along with Hagglund. Kentucky, Creighton, Florida, and Wisconsin (among some of the future pre-season teams to face) will certainly be more of a challenge than the teams this week. I'm optimistic for USC, but there is more concern now. I wouldn't be too concerned because when you see the talent pipeline coming in the next three years...it will be okay. It's a young team this year that will have some losses, but they have a ton of potential.

Saying "They just need the first and second contacts cleaned up a bit" is kind of like saying "The Titanic just needed a bit of bondo...." Didn't see the match so I can't really comment, but the prevalent thinking is that SC needs to find passing to succeed. It may be Gillis, or Bricio really improves, or whatever, but good passing is not something a one hour drill will develop. And second contact infers setting issues, something I did not expect due to the two returning setters. This is stated by an admittedly fanatic Stanford fan hoping that the great hitters imported by SC are not also great passers.
