I really think Taylor Tashima should've gotten either setter or freshman of the week. To come in your first week in collegiate play and set your team to a .350 percentage with 10.9 assists/set is pretty incredible. They probably only looked at players who won MVP honors, but her impact at NU is already noticeable with that win over Northwestern. I'd be careful, this team could make a splash and they're pretty under the radar in the BIG.

Those are some big numbers put up by McMahon! Actually Frantti numbers were better in almost every category.

Those are some big numbers put up by McMahon! Actually Frantti numbers were better in almost every category. I was glad to see Liz McMahon win the award. Based on what I saw from this Illinois team against two good teams this week-end, Illinois' offense will be much more diverse this season. The kills should be spread out among all the hitters, not just two who have been relied on so heavily the last two years. The same goes for successful sets from two setters in Illinois' 6-2. Also, if you have not heard of Illini freshman libero, Brandi Donnelly, you will before the season is over. I keep using this adjective for her, but she is absolutely fearless. I will add another adjective for her, tenacious!

Opponent made the difference though. Since when has that ever mattered. Usually the player of the week gets the award against some weaker teams in case you hadn't noticed.

Congrats to Ali, I can't wait to see this girl play. I heard her shot selection is very mature and at times just crushes the ball. I love when Freshman come in and make a statement right off the bat. Congrats to all winners and Ali!

You should have said that it is not always true and I would have agreed. But you said that's not true. Do you know that for a fact? I didn't think so. On the positive side it gives more players a chance to win the POW awards and be recognized. It happens in all sports and the stats-hungry media find it a rich source of information. I actually would not want to see the same elite players winning the POW awards week after week. If you think about it, it makes sense - it is much easier to dominate when you are not playing the top teams and a favorable player matchup can be exploited.. If you still disagree, check out how few players win the POW awards after playing Penn State. This is only my opinion and I hope I am wrong.

You are notorious for making absurd comments without facts. That's not even debatable. However, just to point out your absurdity regarding your "weaker" team remark, last year almost all teams were considered "weaker" teams than Penn State. Then why didn't Penn State players win B1G Player of the Week every week? Also, how did these players such as Kaitly Leary (OSU) and Stephenie Holthus (NU), whom from the weakest team in the B1G, won the B1G Player of the Week award, genius? Or Yeager (IOWA; defense), Ryan (NU; setter), etc. So I stand by what I said.

Good for jsn12 even though his argument is weak. Only about 10-20% of the teams in the B1G could be considered weak to start with. PSU runs a balanced offense as much as possible so the stats are not just one-sided for a single player match after match. I said there will be exceptions to my statement. You have shown a prime example in that some teams only had one go-to player who would have better stats against most teams, i.e. players like Robo, Turner, Leary, Holtus, etc. I'm sure you heard the comment, "I thought her arm would fall off with so many kill attempts." I make outlandish statements frequently that coaches don't like to hear. There is a certain amount of predictability involved in life and that is why I said I would be shocked if Wisconsin's Sheffield doesn't receive the B1G COY in 2014. The teams that play Rutgers and Maryland twice will have a better chance to get some POW recognition this year than the teams that only play them once. Players excel when they have favorable player matchups whether you believe in it or not. I hope I haven't irritated you too much since it was not my intent.

Why don't you change your thinking of instead of "weaker" team context, that if a player performs well against "good" competition, he/she will be recognized. That's more important than a good player piling up stats against bottom dwellers.
