France takes 2-set lead over Italy. 25-20, 25-20.
U.S. may not have had a good start to these championships, but compared to Italy's, I'll take it. Maybe they can come back and take it in 5 sets. France looks tough, just as expected. No breathing room for anyone in this group.

Website for this championships gets an F so far. Doesn't work half the time and extremely frustrating to navigate when it does work.

If I understand the calculations correctly, these are the possible standings for Pool D after this match is finished:
1) France wins in 4 sets. Earns 3 points. (looking less and less likely) NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. WE ARE GOING TO FIVE.
1 - France 6 points 2 - Iran 5 points 3 - Belgium 4 points 4 - U.S. 3 points 5 - Italy 0 points 6 - Puerto Rico 0 points
2) France wins in 5 sets. Earns 2 points. Italy earns 1 point. ALSO NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.
1 - France 5 points 2 - Iran 5 points 3 - Belgium 4 points 4 - U.S. 3 points 5 - Italy 1 point 6 - Puerto Rico 0 points
3) Italy wins in 5 sets. Italy earns 2 points. France earns 1 point. DING, DING, WE HAVE A WINNER!
1 - Iran 5 points 2 - Belgium 4 points (1.088 points won/lost ratio) 3 - France 4 points (1.000 points won/lost ratio) OOPS. 1ST CALCULATION WRONG. NOW IT'S CORRECT. FRANCE STILL IN 3RD. 4 - U.S. 3 points 5 - Italy 2 points 6 - Puerto Rico 0 points

Italy up at 1st TT 8-5.
Italy 9-5.
Italy 10-5. Looks like they will earn 2 points after all.
Italy 10-6.
Italy 11-6. (After long review officials call touch against France's blocker)
Italy 11-7.
Italy 11-8.
Italy 12-8.
Italy 13-8.
Italy 13-9.
Italy 13-10.
Italy 13-11. Italy takes timeout.
Italy 14-11. Match point.
Italy 14-12. 2nd match point.
That's it. Italy 15-12. Italy wins in 5 sets (20-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-13, 15-12) and earns 2 points.

More interesting video replay decisions in this match. When I was first introduced to this system in World League, I thought it was pretty good, but I think it's got a ways to go.

One thing to remember is at WL you couldn't challenge for a touch because not every arena had the super slow-mo technology necessary. Adding the touch off the block challenges adds a lot of time to the process.

One thing to remember is at WL you couldn't challenge for a touch because not every arena had the super slow-mo technology necessary. Adding the touch off the block challenges adds a lot of time to the process. I didn't state that very well. I think the way it was used in World League worked well, but it's this super slow-mo camerawork for touches at the net that needs more tweaking. I don't mind the extra time--that's to be expected--but the camera angles are really not very good for capturing touches on blocks, no matter how fantastic the slow-mo technology. The tv cameras seem to have better angles about half of the time. I know they're still trying to figure that part out. I think Paul Sunderland oversold its virtues when he was describing it during World League and my expectations were too high.
