Good observation. What you are missing is the fact that the "talent"--as they like to be called--is probably in a studio somewhere in Boston. They are not at the game itself. What you are listening to is what the industry calls a "Voice Over." I don't think it is very good myself....too bland.

watching canada v germany, they are using an english commentator who is going solo, and he is doing a great job. he doesn't do much 'color' commentating, but just a simple and precise play by play and the subsequent comment as a reaction to the play development.
i think menezes and kalish, whether they are live or in studio, just lacked expert knowledge of the game. perhaps they are familiar with volleyball, but at the international level, i just felt like their analysis did not capture the nuances of the international game.

I think Menezes and Kalish would be totally fine for like Florida state volleyball or something, but for the World Championships, just no.

I do have to say, Alison at least tries her best and you can see it. I think if it was just HER commentating the matches, it wouldn't be so bad. Yes it would, because even though she might be trying her best, again, the overall lack of knowledge completely shows. It shows most on what I would call controversial plays, where the referee signal (for those in the know) completely explains what the call is, but since they have absolutely no understanding of the rules of indoor international volleyball, their ability to properly explain to the viewer what happened is, to say the least, sorely lacking. Sergio is even worse, as his area of expertise in volleyball is foot volleyball, which is to just about to volleyball what Pig Latin is to Latin.

kalish and menezes on again for poland v brasil: before the game has even started, kalish has butchered names on both the polish and brazilian side. it seems like to me these guys have never heard these names pronounced correctly.
interestingly: murilo is out.

You just cant repeatedly mix up your own country's athletes names. I heard every which way you can switch and/or combine the last names of Matt, Taylor and sometimes Micah. The biggest scratch my head moment was when the guy said 'They are going without a libero. There is NO libero on the court, Alison!" Alison politely explained what happens when a MB serves.
They should have a cheat sheet in front of them with the phonetic pronunciation of the foreign athlete's names. Commentators should be able to pronounce all names correctly.
I really liked the Englishman. I did like Alison's voice tho. Hope she works to get better at the job and continues on.
