Having seen Carlini play in person 3 times now (leading that great upset of Texas; pushing PSU hard in the title match; and directing the 3-1 win over USC) I have to ask this question:
Is there a single D1 WVB coach you feel would not, today, trade their setter or setters for Carlini and start her in a 5-1 in their next match?
Please list.

Such a good match up two NPOY candidates in Carlini and Vansant. I have Washington, they are at home and I think they will be looking to prove not only to themselves but the country that they did belong in the Final Four last year. I think the attackers from Washington are too good Vansant, Scambray, Nelson, Sybeldon and Jones. If Washington can play match tough like they did against BYU they should be fine.

Having attended all of the Husky home matches this season and the UW-USC match last night as well, I think the Badgers should probably be favored tonight. Their team defense is clearly better than the Huskies, as is their setting. When USC was able to get a good pass and set (which was not very often), the ball still didn't touch the floor on the Badger side very much. They've got a very balanced offense, with a good slide attack that the Huskies will have problems defending, and great leadership from Carlini. If the Huskies get into a lot of extended rallies because they can't put the ball on the floor, the Badgers should take this one.
The only areas where I would give a clear edge to the Huskies are middle attacking (which really depends on good passing) and possibly blocking. If Vansant or Nelson catch fire, then they've probably got an edge in outside hitting, but so much depends on the passing. From what I saw last night, serving is more or less equal between the two teams. The big question is who will pass better. This has been an area of inconsistency and concern this year for the Huskies. They miss Orlandini's (libero) skills, consistency, and leadership from last year. On the other hand, the Badgers weren't very consistent last night, either, and USC is not a particularly good serving team, with the exception of Briccio.
The Huskies will need to be much sharper than they were last night. On the other hand, although the Badgers were clearly better than USC last night, it was a match that really should have gone five sets. The Badgers trailed USC 18-14 in the fourth set and were making a lot of errors. USC's general disarray pretty much gave away set four at the end. The Badgers do not look invincible.
I'm hoping for a good crowd and expect to see one of the best preseason matches this season tonight.

This should be a great game tonight and it's a shame so many fans can't watch it on TV or internet. As for the Washington offense, I have no doubt they are very good especially with the heralded Vansant, plus they are playing at home. However, the Badgers have a good offense too, up to now no one has slowed down either team. The difference in the game will be who has the best defense and the edge has to go to the Badgers. I'm nervous but hopeful. Go Badgers.

Last night made me wonder if Carlini has an extra set of eyes in the back of her head.

The limited TV access is a pain. I would even like to see this game on replay. Not sure if that is possible.

I really like both teams, but Washington came before Wisconsin for me, so that's who I hope will win....Gut feeling is that it will be a tough one and Washington will have to pick up their passing and defense to have a chance to take this one.

It sounds like one of Washingtons setters is injured and may not play. If so, definite advantage Wisconsin. It may be one of those desperate struggles with lots of effort.

Actually, all three setters for the Huskies played last night. Bailey Tanner and Jade Finau are in something of a battle to nail down the second setter in UW's 6-2 offense. Both looked good at times last night and bad at times. I will be very curious to see who JMac plays tonight and whether he sticks with two setters or tries three again. Probably just depends on how the match is progressing.

Washington is working in a lot of freshman into the rotation, with Scambray (OH), Jones (OPP), and Tanner (S) still working out the kinks, plus Strickland (L) is playing a new position. They will put up a better defense than USC, but there will be some holes to exploit. The key could be Sybeldon's and Wade's ability to close the gaps.
I see this as more of a barometer than a must-win match. Win or lose, the teams will get a firmer grasp on what they have to work on.

ESPN abbreviates South Carolina as SCAR and Southern California as USC. When you go to usc.edu it leads you to Southern California. Shows you how much date of establishment matters. USC is California's oldest private University but Stanford is more prestigious. In this debate, I would refer to Wisconsin as WI or WISC .... Washington has always been U-Dub.. (And not just on the west coast, growing up on the east coast UDub has always been washington! UW 44 UW 8 (1960 Rose Bowl)- the winner has had dibs ever since (with Keith Jackson, who once called Washington games, making sure of it).
