Unfortunately, some of the steam for this matchup escaped when pesky South Dakota defeated Colorado in the first match of the Creighton tourney 3-1 (25-18, 26-24, 22-25, 25-22). Do not discount South Dakota's solid win. The undersized Coyotes (is it) played solid volleyball against the Buffs, and took it to their PAC-12 opponent. South Dakota came in with a 4-5 record from the Summit League (that is the vb powerhouse league with Denver, Omaha, Ft. Wayne, Oral Roberts, IUPUI, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, and Western Illinois) and played fearlessly against CU.
Great win for South Dakota and the Summit League...bad loss for the mighty PAC-12.
By the way, the epitome of a one-woman team would seem to be Colorado. Does anyone else play for that team other than Taylor Simpson?

Illinois wins, 3-1. Nice to see Strizak contribute. Another good match for Birks and Donnelly.

Illinois finishes .500 in the PAC-12 (2-2) with losses to UCLA and Stanford, and wins over Washington State and Colorado.
Colorado seemed to make a greater effort to distribute the offense vs. Illinois as opposed to the Taylor Simpson show vs. South Dakota.
Illinois seemed to make a greater effort to use their middles than at any other match this season. A total of 31 middle attacks...11 by Dorn and 20 by Stadick. Not great hitting numbers for either .182 for Dorn and .250 for Stadick. Sophomore OH Michelle Strizak subbed in for Criswell and made the most of her opportunity hitting .385, 5 kills on 13 attacks, 0 errors. To me Strizak seems to be elevating better than her freshman season...very solid performance for her.
OH Birks had 18 kills on 45 attempts (.289)...RS Stark had 10 kills on 20 attacks with one error (.450). Davis and Donnelly both played great defense for UI, and both setters had 22 successful sets, setter Palmer had 3 aces.
My only complaint with the Illini's play was not being able to come back after the set 2 break and put the Buffs away 3-0. Give Colorado credit...they hung tough with Illinois except for set 2. Final scores were 25-23, 25-12, 18-25, 25-21.
South Dakota at 530pm.
