Badgers were 2 points from sweeping Washington last weekend. Badgers were 3 points away from beating Penn state in 4 games and winning national championship (set point game 2, and lead 23-20 in game 4) Badgers lost 1 player that played significant time from last year. The Badgers are very good team The Badgers are a very good team. And yes, they were three points from beating Penn State in four sets. And two sets from winning the match. That's what we call "close but no cigar" in volleyball terms. Penn State has the banner. The Fightin' Carlinis need to deal with it. Too bad they won't be able to travel to Happy Valley to see it until next season.

A team that want to test itself against the best away from the comfort of their home court. Are you saying Wisconsin is not that team?

I just watched the Wisconsin - Washington replay last night and noticed what looked like the UW coaching staff pointing out the pattern to McLaughlin....Also, seems like both Washington middles cheated to the Wisconsin outsides, while their left side blocker (Vansant, etc.) stepped in for the slide, essentially cutting off the open court and making it easier for the middle to turn to close...my guess is PSU has been working on this blocking scheme...

Gobucky,
I don't think people are trying to revise the past. The badgers clearly did not get the better of the exchanges with PSU last year, nor in years previous. That is not in question.
What is in question is what happens on Wednesday. Looking at the matches last year a swing of 4-5 points here and there could have changed some outcomes completely; I still maintain that PSU were lucky to avoid a 5th set last December. They very well might have won that set, but there is no reason to assume they would have, and even less reason to think that this badger team couldn't make up that difference on PSU given they are older, improved and improving in many areas. The question is whether the girls play their game with confidence or let the past play on their minds. I think they are fully capable of doing the former, and if they do they have a really good chance of winning this match.
I see Sheff's emphasis on testing and improving rather than winning as, in part, an attempt to get his team to focus on their own performance, rather than the broader fatalistic historical perspective that NittanyVolley is promulgating. It also happens to be true at this time of year. The real goal is doing best over the 20 game B1G season and going into the tournament performing as well as possible. I'll bet Rose has the same pragmatic attitude. Neither UW nor PSU is the finished article yet, so in the end this is just the first match of 20. This match would have much more importance if it occurred later in the season.
Getting back to real specifics...To me, Bates is the real wild card in this match. How does she respond to the difficult match in Seattle? Will she maintain a legitimate threat at the net on her side of the floor? Will she be prone to frustration and hitting errors in the face of a big block, as she apparently was in the fourth set last Friday? How will she manage when targeted by PSU in serve receive? Then, if she does struggle, is there someone on the bench who is ready to be effective while providing a different look.
Speaking of which, I thought it was interesting that when Sheff was asked if revenge was a motivating factor for the match, the first person he mentioned that would not be affected by such motivation was Kriskova. He then quickly mentioned Juley and then Bates...but it left me wondering why he should worry about what motivates Kriskova going into this match. Probably just a rhetorical flourish...but fun to think about!
EDIT OK I was wrong. He mentioned Juley first. So, nothing to see there.

Interesting...if only you would post this to youtube. I'll say though that the Wisconsin coaching staff would have noticed this already have worked with Carlini to recognize that shift and come up with a counter. Sheff already mentioned that they had a very good video session coming out of the Washington match that taught them alot. It would be risky for Rose to depend on this information. Besides, if Washington was able to implement this in-game, I doubt PSU would have to work hard to implement the same shift.

To SportyBucky, who asked, "who in their right mind would want to travel to the middle of nowhere, Pa", the answer is, "the women who delivered 5 of the last 7 NCAA Championships".

I agree, it'll be easy for PSU to make the shift....also, I hope Wisconsin and Carlini realized how effective Thompson can be hitting in front of her...Washington wasn't as successful there, since they tried to stop the "tendencies" of the slide....hopefully, this is something we see against PSU! Go Badgers...

Russ is one of the best at creating a gameplan based on video evaluation; but so is Sheffield; both teams will be very prepared. The punch-counterpunch will be great to watch. The bottomline in slugfest's like this one, is who has the better players and how many of those players play big in the big moments. Traditionally, Penn State has had more of those kids than other teams.

After watching Wisconsin at Washington, well I will admit I was not sold on Wisconsin this year because there is a lot of pressure to keep the momentum going from the following year even if you keep most of your starters, so didn't think they would be able to hold that status of one of the greats, I WAS WRONG! Wisconsin looked wonderful. They haven't missed a beat, as if they never had an off season or break. I'm so proud of Wisconsin for getting themselves back in the top 10, I can only guess that is where they will stay this season, PSU and even Nebraska will have something to say about the title in the B1G, but Wisconsin was impressive. What an upgrade on the outside for Wisky, I think her name is Bates??? That girl can crush the ball and is not afraid to call herself a freshman because she swings and plays as if she's going into her JR or SR year. Very impressed with her. Is Wisconsin beatable, of course, Washington handed them their first loss, someone had to take it but WOW, I love Wisconsin's team this season and will be cheering for them when they aren't playing Texas (LOL). As for PSU, they have a ton of talent and are very physical and when they put it all together they can be just as good. I think this match will come down to maturity. Wisconsin has the edge over PSU in that aspect of the game but PSU is playing very well and when you put great competition in across the net from PSU, Rose somehow figures it out. Whoever wins this won, hats off to them. I'm neutral as far as who wins it, 2 freshman outsides on each team that can bang and play with a ton of maturity, I'm excited to watch that and also the overall defense and serve and pass of the game. I did notice one small edge Washington had over Wisconsin that I think Wisconsin just needs to mentally prepare for, Washington put a huge block on Wisky and adjusted well and sort of shut them down in a few sets....when this happened I noticed Wisconsin shut down a little, if PSU does the same then and plays to their potential it will be a brawl for the win. Both teams will be wonderful this season!! Good luck

I wonder if Carini's tells are actually signals to her hitters that they are going to get the ball? If so, that is a tell that is not so easy to change overnight.

She will likely start over the freshman who may DS.
