There's also an interesting bit in the article for those contending that Morales is not a good passer:
"In high school, [Deme's] worst skill was passing," Sheffield said. [...] "She's worked really, really hard to be not just an OK passer, but to be a really good passer. Her passing numbers are really solid. We've only had one team that has tried to go after her. They've gone after everybody but her. The frustrating part with her is that there are some matches where she just isn't having a very big impact because people aren't hitting at her and they're not serving at her."
So what I'm reading from this is that Bates' hitting numbers are better than Deme's, and Deme's passing numbers are better than Chapman's, which would be an argument for Deme to play back row for Chappy and for Bates to play L2. As for Workman having played back row for Bates against tOSU, perhaps Sheff wants Bates to focus on hitting, and having her come out when she rotates into the back row is a good opportunity for Bates to be more actively coached during the match as to what the coaches are seeing from the opponents and how Bates should respond. Or maybe Workman is the better server and passer. Dunno.
I adore Deme and I'm really glad that she's not disappointed.

Absolutely love this young lady.
I remember Sheff saying something similar about her passing last year, and it definitely true that teams don't tend to target her. The idea that she is a poor passer must come from high school and early UW days. I just haven't seen it in the last couple years.

Well, Bates didn't play back row at all against tOSU today. Workman served and played back row for Bates. Deme played back row for Ellen, though Ellen served. So I think Sheffield would disagree with you. If Bates were the better passer right now, why wouldn't he leave her in 6 rotations? You don't know why she was only playing front row. There are many reasons that change could've been made. She's been a six-rotation player all season up until that match. She was recruited because of her ability to control the ball. As a freshman, there is obviously a learning curve and she'll get better with time and reps, but Morales is not the better passer or defender. She just simply isn't. Is "banned" a reference to your coloring ala a Badger? Deme and Bates' passing is a wash. I believe Bates' defending has been better. She seems quicker with better instincts. I've been impressed with her speed back middle. Haven't felt the same way about Deme.

Blocking is a bigger issue than passing right now. The blocking might get better. Not so confident about the passing improving. It's not awful, but it's not 2013 either. So Kriskova played one point, game #11, I think she just blew the chance to red shirt. If it had been game #10, she might have gotten it. I think it's less than 33% of the season. I disagree regarding which is more important/bigger issue now for the Badgers. To side out, they depend entirely on getting one-on-one situations to terminate because our hitters aren't that overpowering, athletic. Our lack of blocking doesn't reflect how well we touch the ball on the block producing digs and providing side-out opportunities. We absolutely need passing and it hasn't been that phenomenal this season. Bates has been okay. Moray isn't passing as well as Hickey. I don't think Deme gives us what we need in that regard.

It would be nice to see the passing statistics that the coaches are seeing.
