Don't know much about Providence, DePaul graduated or lost 7 players from last year I think, so a lot of freshman on the court and 2 upperclassman, so i wouldnt say really bad. Probably more inexperience and trying to get the chemistry going with so many new faces... . I would think they will be better next year and this year was a rebuilding year for them. I watched the match last night...DePaul should have won it in 3. They were up and had the little mistakes (inexperience) lose the match for them.

The reason I put DePaul and Georgetown in a category with Providence is not just this season's record. While that's an issue along with DePaul's RPI, a bigger one for me is that neither program has been in the top half of the conference, I think ever. Good non-confernce records prove that you're scheduling people that you can beat. Poor non-conference records can be a sign of a team that is trying to get better.
I think that Providence, as a first-year member, deserves some time to get their act together. It doesn't mean that anybody has to send their second string out to play against them, if they don't want to. And what GAMES Providence won in BE play back in 2002 shouldn't be a factor in today's discussion.
Oh, and congratulations to Creighton on a nice win Friday against Marquette without the back end travel advantage.

Big weekend for Marquette to try and distance themselves from the 3 way tie for 2nd. And a loss (or dare I say 2), would put them in jeopardy of missing the Big East tournament let alone the NCAAs.

Including the Big East Tournament, Marquette would play 9 out of its last 11 games in Milwaukee if they can go to the conference championship. They have also put the crazy road grinder of three games in five days behind them. A win over Butler, who is hot, this weekend at home, would set MU up nicely. Seton Hall and Butler both have games against Creighton and MU. Seton Hall seems to have hit a wall the second time through the conference, though, so MU's outlook is more favorable for at least the Top 4.

Great weekend for Marquette, as they sweep Butler and Xavier at home to stay in a 2nd place tie with Seton Hall, 1.5 games behind Creighton. With just 1 tough game left out of 5, Marquette is in excellent shape to qualify for the conference tournament, to be held on their home court.

Creighton: Nice job by the Bluejays this weekend sweeping through travel partner Georgetown.
Seton Hall took care of business at St. John's and Providence and defeated LIU Brooklyn.
Butler, Xavier and Villanova split the weekend
Georgetown, Depaul and Providence went winless.
Coming up, Creighton and Georgetown travel to Xavier and Butler; St. John's and Providence at Marquette and Depaul; Seton Hall and Villanova have travel partner weekend at Seton Hall and neither team scheduled a second match this week.

Updated Conference Standings
School Conference W-L Creighton 12-1 Marquette 10-3 Seton Hall 10-3 Butler 9-4 Xavier 8-5 St. John's 6-6 Villanova 5-8 Georgetown 3-9 DePaul 1-12 Providence 0-12
With only four teams qualifying for the conference tourney I have to mark Villanova and below as effectively if not mathematically eliminated. With most teams having 5 remaining games I don't see a scenario where the fourth team falls to a record of 10-8. Creighton's matchups with Xavier and Butler on the road highlight this weekend's slate. Upset wins by the Musketeers or Bulldogs would go a long way towards writing their tournament tickets while losses would leave both teams tenuously on the bubble.
St. John's needs a major run to stay in contention. As one of the few teams with 6 matches remaining and Marquette, DePaul, Creighton, Georgetown, Butler and Xavier on the schedule the Red Storm can still make a serious run if they get hot.
The Big East website has to be one of the lamest in college sports. The only update for the weekend other than the scoreboard is for field hockey. Standings are only updated when a weekly release is created. Sometimes that step has been skipped for other sports (not volleyball that I have seen). Every team in the conference is doing a better job than the league at updating their websites. Are currently updated standings near the close of the playoff run so much to ask for from the Big East Conference?

We can talk RPI's all we want but DePaul took Butler to 5 games this past weekend and DePaul took a game from Creighton a few weeks ago. Unfortunately we will probably never get more than 1 or 2 teams into the NCAA tournament with only a ten team conference. In the old conference with 16 teams I can only remember getting 3 teams in once and that's with upsets in the Conference Tourney. Right now I don't think any of the coaches are worried about their RPI. I think Marquette is probably in and Creighton should be good but Xavier, Butler and Seton Hall are fighting like crazy to make the tourney and going to try and beat them at home (not an easy task) and all the rest want to upset who ever they can! Beware of St. John's, they have nothing to lose!

Barring an upset in the conference tourney, the BE looks to be a 1-2 bid league as long as the bottom of the league (DePaul and Providence) remain terrible and an anchor on RPI of the top teams. However, last year, when the entire conference was better than 175 in RPI, the BE just missed being a 3 bid (or with upset in conference tournament, 4 bid) league. Should the bottom of the league improve, there's nothing structural barring it from putting more teams into the NCAA tournament. Look at men's soccer, where the BE got 5 of its 10 teams in last year, and probably 4-5 this year, and there is only a field of 48 teams overall.
The BE website IS extremely lame, but not so the BE Digital Network on the Fox Go app. I've been pleasantly surprised by the high quality of production and streaming, and the fact that it airs for free.

Creighton at Butler is a big match tonight. If the Jays win that one, they likely run away with the conference title. A Butler win likely cements a berth for them in the conference tournament. This is Butler's first weekend back in the newly renovated Hinkle Fieldhouse.
