HUGE comeback for Creighton on Butler's home floor. Outblocked badly in the early going, Creighton changed setters and were led to victory by OH Jess Bird, who had career highs in kills (21) and digs (23). Final score was 18-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-20, 15-13. Creighton rallied from down 8-10 in the 5th. The win moves the RPI to ~34, maintains the Jays' 1.5-game lead over Marquette, and Creighton has the tiebreaker over Marquette due to their series sweep. Butler will need to bounce back next Saturday at home vs. Xavier, which will probably decide the 4th and final conference tournament berth.

According to the Big East website St. John's still has a chance to make the conference tourney. They would need to win out, however and need Butler and Xavier to lose a lot. Below is the remaining Big East schedule. St. John's does get a shot at each of Butler and Xavier on the final weekend.
Of matches of particular note are Marquette at Seton Hall this Friday and the season ending match Seton Hall at Creighton, both of which are possible previews of conference tournament matchups.
14 Fri. (rv) Creighton at Providence * 7 p.m. DePaul at Villanova * 7 p.m. Georgetown at St. John’s * 7 p.m. (rv) Marquette at Seton Hall * 7 p.m. Xavier at Butler * 7 p.m.
15 Sat. Georgetown at Providence * 3 p.m. (rv) Creighton at St. John’s * (BEDN) 5 p.m. DePaul at Seton Hall * 6 p.m. (rv) Marquette at Villanova * 7 p.m.
21 Fri. Providence at Butler * (BEDN) Noon St. John’s at Xavier * Noon Seton Hall at Georgetown * 8 p.m. Villanova at (rv) Creighton * 8 p.m.
22 Sat. St. John’s at Butler * Noon DePaul at (rv) Marquette * 7 p.m. Providence at Xavier * 7 p.m.
23 Sun. Seton Hall at (rv) Creighton * 1 p.m. Villanova at Georgetown * 2 p.m.
Excerpted from the Big East weekly release: KNOW YOUR TIEBREAKERS With the second round of BIG EAST conference play getting underway, teams are meeting up for the second time this season. That means tiebreakers come to the forefront. According to the BIG EAST’s volleyball tiebreakers, in the event that two teams split their match results in head-to-head competition, individual sets won between the two would then be considered. If the teams are still tied, points scored in those matches will be considered to break the tie.

I'm calling the St Johns/Creighton match on Saturday so we'll see if they bring their "A" game

Seton Hall beats Marquette in 4 27-25 19-25 27-25 25-16. This should improve SHU's RPI but I think it probably means we will see these two teams again in round 1 of the Big East Tournament. They sure like to make things exciting. As has been said before, it's a great Offensive team against a great Defensive team.So how does the tiebreaker work when head to head sets are the same and points scored in those matches are the same?

I don't think it even matters as the 2/3 seeds play each other no matter. Either way, MU will have the home advantage by hosting. The two teams do make for a great battle. I do think Seton Hall has to win the BET to get in the NCAA with their weaker out of conference schedule. That would put MU on the bubble. MU has been banged up lately, especially at the defensive positions, with various starters out or playing through injuries. So, they have not been trending well in overall play although they have depth to plug in. They need to get healthy. Any other complaints about Butler's temporary gym while Hinkle is under construction? I know Theis protested before MU's match due to the dark lighting and players unable to pick up the ball.

Any other complaints about Butler's temporary gym while Hinkle is under construction? I know Theis protested before MU's match due to the dark lighting and players unable to pick up the ball. Butler only played two matches there. The Marquette match, and a blowout win over DePaul. Their other "home" matches were played at an area high school gym.

The weekend's results: Seton Hall 3 Marquette 1 Villanova 0 Marquette 3 Seton Hall 3 DePaul 2 Villanova 3 DePaul 2 Providence 3 Georgetown 0 Providence 0 Creighton 3 Creighton 3 St. John's 2 St. John's 3 Georgetown 1 Xavier 3 Butler 1
Updated standings: Creighton 15-1 Seton Hall 13-3 Marquette 13-4 Xavier 10-6 Butler 10-6 St. John's 8-8 Villanova 5-11 Georgetown 4-10 Providence 2-14 DePaul 1-16
With the wins Creighton clinched at least a tie for the regular season conference title and eliminated St. John's from contention.
Xavier gained the upper hand in the race for the final conference tourney spot with the victory over Butler by virtue of tiebreak. Earlier in the season Butler defeated Xavier in Cincinnati 3-2 so Xavier wins the HTH total sets battle 5-4.
The three tiebreak levels that I have been able to find for volleyball leave Marquette and Seton Hall tied. If Seton Hall falls to Creighton and everything else goes as expected MU and SH will tie for 2nd-3rd. While the distinction will be inconsequential I'll still be interested to see what the next tiebreak is. The tiebreaks that I know of (after overall conference record) are:
HTH wins: 1-1 HTH sets won: 4-4 HTH total points: 208-208

I haven't had a chance to see Seton Hall this year. What is the difference maker for this team? Are there major new players or an older unit competing better together? This is a major shift for their program.

First time in almost two years that Seton Hall has not had major injuries with this group. The entire starting group is playing very well. Biggest improvement is Senior MB Ashani Rubin. Even though she is a senior she has only gotten significant playing time for two years. She is ranked 2nd in nation in total blocks and leads conference in blocks per set. Senior OH Stacey Manthope and Senior Setter Shelby Manthorpe are doing extremely well and Sophomore Libero Tessa Fournier leads conference in digs. Solid team all around.

I saw Seton Hall/St Johns - Rubin is a force at the net, if she's not getting stuffs she still gets a lot of touches. Good hands and better feet

According to the latest Big East press release there is now a 3 way tie for the 4th seed so things are heating up going into the last weekend of play.

According to the latest Big East press release there is now a 3 way tie for the 4th seed so things are heating up going into the last weekend of play. Only possibility of that is if St. John's and Providence both sweep Xavier and Butler on the road. Little chance of that actually happening. Here are the seeding scenarios going into the weekend. And, congratulations to Autumn Bailey of Marquette... AVCA National Player of the Week. #1 seed -- Creighton will secure the #1 with a win over Villanova or Seton Hall this weekend. #2 and #3 seed -- Should Seton Hall beat Georgetown and Creighton, they would earn the #2 over Marquette. Should Seton Hall split with Georgetown and Creighton, and Marquette beat DePaul, the two teams would be tied with Marquette in the standings, tied in the 1st tiebreaker (sets won head-to-head), and tied in the 2nd tiebreaker (points won head-to-head). Marquette and Seton Hall each beat the other 3-1 on the home court with a 7-point differential! I don't know if there are more tiebreakers or if it goes to a coin flip. #4 seed -- For the 4th and final seed, Xavier and Butler are tied, both with home games left against Providence and St. John's, but Xavier owns the tiebreaker.

Bracket is now finalized...
(1) Creighton (4) Xavier
(2) Seton Hall (3) Marquette
Not sure why Seton Hall has the tie-breaker clinched, but Marquette's story on today's win over DePaul says the Golden Eagles have locked up the #3 seed.
