22-17 badgers. Iowa is just not lying down. Think they will cause trouble rest of the year.

Actually I think Iowa played well rather than we played particularly poorly. They are much better than I remember. Defense was OK passing better, they have some good hitters. They didn't fold. The 5 setter to illinois and the win against NW were not flukes IMO.
They have trouble avoiding the block. UW outblocked Iowa 15-5, according to live stats. Outhit Iowa only 0.245 to 0.145. That was some sloppy hitting toward the end that brought the average down and let Iowa back into the match several times.

Haleigh had a great, clean game tonight -- no errors hitting .545 and 6 block assists, 1 solo block, and 2 aces. Also thought Bates had a real solid match, came through especially when we really needed a big hit -- ended up hitting .250. Court also did well, hitting .318, 6 assists and 13 digs. Thought our passing was pretty good tonight. They seemed to target Deme on serve receive, but she did pretty well. She and Morey both have 0.960 reception percentages this year.
Ellen was quiet. I worry about her sometimes. Thompson had some errors that kept her efficiency low. Carlini's dumps didn't score points, though they often forced Iowa to scramble and we often got points as a result of blocks or errors. Her defensive game was not as striking tonight, nor was Morey's, although she had a couple great saves.

It's interesting...we won this match on the strength of our block (net 10 points) and service (net 7 points). That and the three ball handling errors by Iowa pretty much accounts for the 19 point differential entirely.

It wasn't the best match for Wisconsin, but I will still take the sweep. I do think Iowa is improving. The slides gave the Badgers problems, and the Hawkeyes made some nice digs. I will also give them credit for not packing it in once they got down in sets, as they made runs in the last two and just fell victim to a huge scoring run off the serve of Morey in the first.
As for Wisconsin, I will start out with what wasn't great. The left side blocking got tooled a lot, there were too many truly unforced hitting errors, and the floor defense was not at its usual level. Morey clearly had an off night in that regard, which was noticeable because of just how good she has been this season. Fortunately, Thomas had a big night in that regard, and Nelson did well in the time she was in there. Speaking of Nelson, she didn't get a lot of swings (although was effective when she did) but really did a lot to help carry her team through. She blocked well and came up with some big blocks, and the team made the decisive runs in the second and third sets behind her serve. It is too bad that the one run of errors in the third set held down the hitting numbers of Thomas a bit, since she really had a big match all around, helping to carry the offense in the first two sets, blocking well, and playing well in the back row. Thompson wasn't great offensively, but she came up with a ton of blocks, including I think three in a row in the third set. Morales got targeted in serve receive, but that only yielded one ace and mostly she held up pretty well, in my opinion. Carlini made a couple of ridiculous plays, and there were fewer off sets than on Saturday, which was just a handful then. I think Bates is really growing as a hitter. She is mixing her shots better and had one error where she tried to wipe the ball off the block because it was really all she could do. Also, when Iowa had cut the lead to two, she came far into the middle on a broken play. The result was one of the hardest hit balls I have ever seen and a really emphatic kill at a key time. That was impressive. Even when Iowa dug her hard hit shots, they didn't seem to get much off them in terms of transition opportunities. That kind of reminded me of Dolgner when she was healthy. As for Chapman, Iowa did a good job of slowing her down, in my opinion. She hit some nice shots and mostly avoided errors, but give the Hawkeyes credit there. I hope the Badgers can get her going a little more, but I do appreciate what she does when I see other teams' left sides hit out of system.
All in all, I would have liked a little less drama, but Iowa seems to be making strides under Shymansky, and the Badgers found a way to get a sweep yet again, this time aided by the block, which wasn't a huge factor for them early in the season. Lest I forget, I would like to point out that they have equaled the top overall and league win totals from the 2008-12 period with 11 matches to go in league play. Perspective on how far the team has come.

Quotes for the #Sheffsayswhat and @quotesbyhaleigh from the news article: “Her dream is to be the libero,” Sheffield said. “She’s coming around. Early on she would try to make some digs and you’d worry for her health and her teammates’ health because she’d be flopping around like a whale out of water" The digs are awesome,” said Nelson, who came up one short of her personal high for digs. “I love playing the back row. Kelly’s almost got it right. My dream is not to be the libero, my dream is to be a six-rotation middle. “I love playing the back row and my teammates are so supportive of me when I get digs because they know I hit the ground pretty hard. So when I get a dig, they’re pretty happy I haven’t broken any bones.” Read more: host.madison.com/sports/college/volleyball/badgers-volleyball-uw-sweeps-iowa-for-th-straight-victory/article_41e103ff-ab4b-5c95-a7b9-97eb9981159d.html#ixzz3GyOL4yFw

What I meant was that we had 10 blocks more than they (15-5), and on service we had a net haul of 4 points off of service (6-2) while they had a -3 points off of service (2-5). So the match was basically decided based on our superior block and service game. The rest (well except ball handling) was relatively even.

Can you imagine a 6 rotation middle...the way we used to play (or what I've seen from when I was a child)?

I believe Tori Dixon at Minnesota was one.

Tori played six rotations for the back row attack and was hidden as much as possible.

Some of the comments that come out of Sheff, Hayleigh and the others is so refreshing compared to the dry stuff you often here in press conferences etc. These people are serious, but they are also having a good time. That's a real strength of this team.
