To me, that's basically the definition of an elite volleyball program -- those players ARE replaced. Or if not replaced there are players coming in that still keep the program at that level, year after year.
It's not happening at Minnesota this year. If people want to say the program is no longer elite I still think they are jumping the gun. But that's a lot different from saying Minnesota was never elite.

But that's a lot different from saying Minnesota was never elite. the only reason MN was not able to replace Dixon, Wittman effectively is because of the recruiting hit they took when Hugh came into the scene. Many players were afraid to commit based on rumors that he was not going to coach and most TOP girls from 10th grade in high school were already committed to top programs giving Hugh little to choose from. This is a very young team made mostly of freshman and sophomore players, yet they are still competing with some top "elite" programs, once these girls become juniors along with other recruits Hugh has had a fair chance at recruiting, things will get back to normal in MN.

The idea that there was a belief that Hugh wasn't coming is greatly over-played. The biggest problem was that recruits couldn't speak with Hugh because he wasn't technically "on-staff" and could not contact players being recruited. Making a commitment without being able to get to know the coach is clearly problematic. But Hugh hasn't exactly been burning up the recruiting wars since his arrival. And that stems in part from his personality--he probably seems pretty boring and uninspiring to most teenage girls with dreams.

You just described how teenage girls feel about all males over 35. And that age limit could probably be considerably lower.

Wait, I thought players committed to Illinois because Hambly, was, like, all dreamy and stuff. Is that wrong? I think he's over 40 even! It's Hugh's hair. Or lack of it. If he just had Hambly's hair MN wouldn't be in this pickle. I'm not sure how Sheffield and Shondell managed to do ok though. ;-)

I'm talking about being boring and uninspiring, not about attraction.
But it was also a joke.

Has anyone ever figured out why there's so much baldness in the volleyball coaching ranks? Ball State has something to do with it.

OK, glad we moved off the "what teenaged girls like" topic because I never understood that, even when I was one.
I'm excited to see what my Gophers can do tonight. Not sure if they felt any pressure before, but if they did (rankings, etc.) that should be less onerous now. I hope they swing away and see what happens! Except when they should tip. Volleyball is hard.

Hugh's a really nice guy, but he seems pretty monotone and relatively uninspiring compared to his colleagues across the college volleyball scene. His this affected his recruiting though? I don't think so. I know for a fact there there are recruits who are interested because of Hugh's whole Olympic experience.
Hoping for some energy and fight out of the gophers tonight, and the ability to keep sets close.
