Texas as a team seemed out of sync and played flat tonight, with many players making uncharacteristic mistakes. I hope they really clean up the passing against Saturday's match with OU. I know that I've been one to criticize her, but I hope Amy Neal's injury isn't severe. She really does the little things that makes the team's 6-2 system run more smoothly. I don't know how they (or any team) can really be in sync when not a single player plays 6 rotations.

As does Amy, when she's in the starting line-up (instead of Pilar).

Nothing says "I don't trust my setter" like pulling your setter 10 points into the game. TCU usually runs a 6-2 but their other setter (Trish Langley) did not travel with the team. Also noticed she did not play last week. Don't know if she is hurt.
Anyway, Langley is a local who played for the Austin Jrs and at Round Rock HS. She has a very good serve. Any TCU fans have any updates about Langley?
I think pulling the current setter tonight was strategic on the coaches part to put in a bigger block when she had to play front row. This happened a couple of times during the match.

I wonder if this means that we will start seeing a six rotation Eckerman? As much as I would like Eckerman to be on the court for all 6 rotations, her passing isn't strong enough to keep the team in system. She was really struggling with the 3 rotations she passes in when she's in the front row. At one point, they went to a 2-person receive formation to get her out of the passing lanes. But Eck wasn't the only one being targeted..so was Pilar. She passed a lot of balls that were off the net in serve-receive, which made the offense predictable since they had to hit more out-of-system. She was also slow reacting with her floor defense and missed several balls that went down for a kills. And when the passing/ball control is off, Nicole really struggles with her setting location. There were many balls that had to be pushed over. But credit to TCU for serving tough tonight. I was surprised to see Paulina pulled out of the match for Tiffany. I really like seeing Paulina taking rips on the ball. But I guess Jerritt wanted better blocking on the right pin because Tiffany doesn't add anything offensively from that position. She was, however, moved into serve-receive when Eckerman was struggling, so I guess there is that option. Dalton and Pilar also busted out jump float serves I haven't seen before this season... they just need to get more consistency. I know that I've been one to criticize her, but I hope Amy Neal's injury isn't severe. She really does the little things that makes the team's 6-2 system run more smoothly. Looked like classic playing to the level of your opposition. 3rd set was more of a mess than the first 2. Baker did not look good in the 3rd set.
Neal did not participate during warmups but she did run out with the team when they came out to the court to start the match.
Collins is coming on strong. I think she looks very comfortable as a back row setter. Her decision making was good and she has a great rapport with the middles. I really like what she did with Chiaka when Chiaka could not put the ball down. She immediately came back to her for a kill. This happened 3 times during the match. I think Dalton has regressed a bit. Maybe she still isn't 100%. BTW, her serving form is terrible. She went to a jump serve today and still looked uncomfortable. Must be a mental thing.
Eckerman had another excellent match hitting. Bell also.
Victoria had her best match since early in the season.
The block was not there tonight. My feeling is Texas only goes as far in the post season against top teams as their block takes them.Box Score

As the lineups were being displayed on TV, announcer Nell Fortner said Neal was sitting out due to injury, and Pilar would start in her place (like she did 2 matches ago, but not against KSU this past Saturday). What I found interesting was Nell stating that Eckerman was rounding into better shape, and jumping higher. Think she said something about her losing some weight, but perhaps I'm "misremembering". I wonder if this means that we will start seeing a six rotation Eckerman? With all the hitting options on the team, I don't think Eckerman's back row attack is a necessity at this point. I think Brooks is doing very well substituting for Eckerman.

Also, since the setters have gotten her the ball she needs and she can focus solely on hitting, she is terminating so well! In other news, this is the first time since '09 I've actually felt comfortable with them running the 6-2! I still always prefer a 5-1 just because the setting is more consistent, but Texas is looking so good this year.

Also, for the second game in a row, our setter with the most assists has tied the opposing setter in assists (both ran 5-1's)

Yeah, bizarre match -- they were looking really good the first two sets and then tailed off out of nowhere. Khat got really out of sync, and chiaka started side arming every attack and really struggled that last set. Hayley struggled at the beginning but really found her groove passing and hitting by the end.
I don't know why someone thought pilar didn't play well; she had a shank and a couple of passes off the net at the beginning, but once she got in a groove it was perfect pass after perfect pass (on some pretty tough serves! TCU was surprisingly strong in that area)--I never see that kind of consistency and precision with Amy. And she was definitely in the right position most of the time in regard to floor defense, getting some pretty good digs and at least getting her hand on some hard-hits. Her hitting was phenomenal too and she put up a solid block. Her new bricio-imitation serve was unsurprisingly error-prone, so ill give Amy the huge nod on serving in the battle between the two--but tonight just reminded me again why pilar is the better choice in the starting line-up.
Even though we seemed out of sync/disinterested tonight, there were some awesome moments of scrappiness and great transition play that really showed the potential of the team. We're definitely getting there, just gotta keep improving the little things (and the block -- where was it tonight??)

Too many pin sets were not to the pin. Too many middle sets were WAY too low. Having watched the match last night, Haley seems checked out until it matters. I've heard from friends who hang with her she's given up caring. Don't care what it is, but she is not playing like she means it. I love how the two Cat/Khats play. I love how Paulina, Pilar and Molly play. They all have fire. Think that someone needs to put a flame to Haley and Chloe's butts. They don't seems to care. Chloe just isn't that special, but if I were seeing her try point in, point out, I'd maybe think differently about her.

Keep her on the ground when serving and keep Amy on the bench.

Adios.

She lost the starting job to Amy because of her inconsistent, tentative play. Maybe she's back in form.

Adios. And if you actually read, I mentioned 6 players I thought were great. I criticized three. That does not make me a Texas hater. What it makes me is realistic and able to evaluate a game.
