The life of a professional athlete isn't what it's all cracked up to be. Most of them are ALWAYS working and ALWAYS away from their friends and families. It's sad, really. Unlike other high paying professions, professional athletes have generally been doing nothing else in their life except play that sport (and studying for school). At the end of the day sometimes the high profile, experience, and money just isn't worth the sacrifice.
I hope he find some balance in his life, and if that means for him not playing volleyball professionally, so be it.

Very shocked to read this. Wish him a speedy recovery.
Some may wonder how a guy like Anderson who seemingly has everything be depressed? He is young, rich, very good looking and blessed with talent to play volleyball at the highest level. Depression do not practise discrimination and attack all kind of people.
I may never understand why he is depressed but I just accept he is depressed and wish him the best and hope to see him on the court soon

At the end of the day sometimes the high profile, experience, and money just isn't worth the sacrifice. The Beatles broke up because of too much fame, the boss, tom petty all broke up their bands due to way too much adulation. So sad that people want to be famous and they have no talent.

Shocking, really hope he can recover and find peace, whether it be volleyball or something else. He's a great looking guy and has a lot of things ahead of him.

Maybe he prefers finding an American to marry and take back to Russia.

He is my favorite men's player and one of the best in the world. I hate the article that is posted. Its headline is tacky saying Matt quit. He is taking a temporary hiatus from a sport he loves due to being homesick which could be caused to him being in another country miles or metaphorically worlds apart from the ones he loves. This article from NBC sports is much better in my opinion. Good luck Matt and I look forward to your return our country's Men's team needs you in Brazil. olympictalk.nbcsports.com/2014/10/29/matt-anderson-volleyball-depression-olympics/

Depression do not practise discrimination and attack all kind of people. I may never understand why he is depressed but I just accept he is depressed and wish him the best and hope to see him on the court soon The "why" is that depression is a chemical imbalance. Biological in origin. Often hereditary. It attacks indiscriminately, just like type I diabetes or epilepsy. I wish Matt well as he navigates his way out of this internal wilderness, and hope he gets what he needs to recover.

When a person suffers a loss or a setback, it can lead to sadness and a grieving response. We often say that such a person is sad or depressed. As with all our emotions, this is a matter of our brain chemistry (neurotransmitters). In this case, the changes in the brain are a response to the outside stimulus of loss. But some people are prone to having the same emotions without any outside stimulus at all. When that happens, people struggle with "depression" without there being any external "why".

Yes, so much like an autoimmune disorder or allergies occur when one's immune system attacks a healthy part of the body or an otherwise innocuous foreign visitor (like a food) for no good reason, depression occurs when one's brain chemistry creates this sadness/grieving response absent the outside stimuli that would normally be the trigger.

Yes, this is a good analogy.

I saw a special on the danger of air travel in Russia for pro athletes. I would be worried and depressed about that alone.

Coming home to the US will be good for him. His boyfriend will be very happy now and they can spend more time together. Being apart with a love one is always hard

Not that it matters, but I swear, if there was a "gay" sport, it would be volleyball. Half the guys I've ever played with are gay men...not that I'm complaining
