5,052. That was the attendance last night.
5,052 for six (6) Pac-12 Volleyball matches!
Sure, there's the laundry list of excuses: It was halloween night; California schools don't draw well; TV scheduling has created weird start times; blah, blah, blah.
But it seems to me there's a real problem with Pac-12 Volleyball and attendance. This is a great sport, the conference is having a remarkable year. It's a great product that is very family friendly and, now, has more exposure than ever before.
So why does attendance for Pac-12 volleyball absolutely, positively, stink to high heavan.
These numbers from the 10/31 matches are, frankly, embarrassing:
Cal at Oregon: 1,297 Colorado at UA: 989 Stanford at OSU: 818 UW at UCLA: 710 WSU at USC: 594 Utah at ASU: 644

What is the overall trend over the last five or ten years? Improving or getting worse?

What is the overall trend over the last five or ten years? Improving or getting worse? I present for comparison the attendance numbers for Friday, October 31, 2008 #6 Washington at #5 Stanford: 1,852 Washington State at #4 California: 471 Oregon State at #9 UCLA: 448 #7 Oregon at #12 USC: 379

Whether it's trending up or down hardly seems important when you put up numbers like Pac-12 schools did Friday night.
And remember, at UCLA attendance was free; at Oregon, tickets were $3 if you wore any kind of 'costume.'
It seems to me the conference has an opportunity to put a marketing plan together to take better advantage of a great product which, for a variety of reasons, is falling flat in fan appeal.
(There are more 'views' of the UW @ UCLA match thread on Volleytalk than the attendance for six Pac-12 matches combined)

Well, the number one reason most nights is the scheduling caused by the PAC-12 Network. Hands down. With things like 11am Sunday and lots of Wednesday night contests attendance was going to be down. Getting rid of Saturday contests is close to criminal.
However, USC and UCLA have NEVER drawn well and UCLA has the double-whammy of student being used to not attending home games (it was their first on campus) and having a basketball game (albeit a exhibition against a D2 school) across the street at Pauly. Having basically no crowd with free admission is a joke. On UW's worst night they probably had twice what UCLA drew for a match against the #2 team in the country.

I would have attended the UCLA match, but it would involve driving on the 405 during rush hour. I would take public transport, but those brilliant LA politicians didn't connect the Metro Rail to any population destinations, such as LAX, USC or UCLA, or Staples, etc. Oh yeah, and last night was also Halloween, and if there's no candy being dished out, the neighborhood kids get vicious with their tricks.

Southern Californians can't drive with even the thought of rain.

I'm sure the Big Ten had better attendance, but I'd be surprised if any other conference averaged any better last night.
The Missouri Valley Conference had 5 matches last night that totaled 4115 spectators (2638 @ UNI, 1477 total in the other 4 matches). that's an average of 823 per match vs. 842 per match in the Pac 12

If I lived in Southern California, I'd never go anywhere. Murderous freeways.
Here in Northern California, I don't really drive anywhere more than 35 minutes (each way) unless I absolutely positively have no choice. For example, I had to drive to Marin County (95+ minutes) for a wedding a couple of weekends ago. I rarely visit San Francisco because of the traffic.
