I'm trying to get a layman's version of the differences between URS and pablo (and perhaps RPI). Would it be accurate to say that URS does a better job of reproducing who won the matches, but pablo does a better job of producing the "score" of the match? In other words, URS can model 9 of 10 match winners, but will have no information or poor information on whether the matches were close. Pablo will model 8 of 10 match winners and additionally give a pretty good idea as to whether the matches were close or not. I think the short summary is that while Pablo is designed to give the best predictions of outcomes of matches that have not been played, the URS is designed to give the best reflection of outcomes of matches that have been played. The extent to which Pablo reflects prior wins and losses and to which URS predicts the future is not completely coincidental, but not by any intent. I don't like the distinction that Pablo gives an idea how close they were because that's not the real fundamental difference. The main difference I think is that Pablo takes extreme results and considers them outliers, whereas URS treats them as equal. Therefore, consider my example about of a team that beats #20 and loses to #120. Pablo will put them somewhere in-between, and if you include points, closer to one side or the other. However, URS will put them either above 20 or below 120. Would you consider it to be a reasonably accurate description of this system if one said you were building a differential equation to approximate the actual wins and losses? (I'm thinking way back to my high school calculus, where the differential equation approximated a tangent--with the tangent point in this case somehow being the actual win/loss.)

wouldn't the evaluation of a system by seeing how it predicted prior games be a little suspect, i.e., somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy - I would think the prediction of future matches would be a much better indication of a rating's 'accuracy'

I think the point is to develop the system to describe events that already happened, which then forms the basis for predicting. The difficulty of predicting accurately is highlighted by the fact that the system is only 88% accurate describing events that already happened.

'only' 88%, that's pretty good - given injuries, unusual circumstances, etc., that's pretty good

The problem with most other systems, like pablo, is that they are used for predictive purposes and the NCAA selection criteria generally doesn't care about which teams will win, but which teams have won. In other words, UPR is the best current system for showing how all teams rank according to what they've already done on the season, what they've already accomplished. Between UPR and pablo, RPI is pretty much worthless. RPI is worse at predicting than pablo and it is worse at reflecting what teams have accomplished than UPR. In my opinion, the selection committee should drop RPI and use UPR.

Approximately 10% of all matches are excluded from the formula - as if the results did not occur. Here is a partial list of matches that would not count (winner listed first).

Approximately 10% of all matches are excluded from the formula - as if the results did not occur. Yeah, a lot of people are missing the point here. The point is NOT the UPR is the next best thing. In fact, the point, if anything, is that UPR is a BAD idea. As we have discussed, conceptually, there is a problem, in that UPR doesn't treat outliers as outliers and take that into account, it is that in an attempt to treat everything as equal, it's approach is accommodate one perfectly and ignore the other. The consequence is that if the system can't accommodate it, teams aren't rewarded or penalized for those "upset" results. We see the consequences in the final rankings, with things like Colorado being included as a top ten team. I know that I have always said you can't evaluate a ranking by saying the results don't make sense, but I'm not doing that here, I'm saying that Colorado illustrates the problems that result when you have this type of approach. In this, I wanted to show that it is real easy to get a system that does a MUCH better job of reflecting "what has happened", and notice that it isn't even close. None of the more commonly used models come anywhere close to doing as good of a job as UPR in reflecting what happened. But that's because that's not really what we want to do. Sure, we want to "reflect what happened" but we have to be smart about it. UPR isn't the smart way to rank teams. I realized this a long time ago, but have never brought it up here. Look at the results. The problem with RPI is NOT that it doesn't do a good job reflecting what has happened or even that it doesn't do a good job of prediction. It's not as good as some other systems, depending on your preferences, but it isn't awful in that respect. The bigger problem with RPI is the regional bias issues and the ability to be manipulated so much. Something like Massey or Pablo W/L can do the same type of thing without nearly as much bias involved, and harder to manipulate. Full Pablo is even better in that respect, but you have to allow for margin of victory. The UPR approach is a bad idea.

Has the methodology been published somewhere? How do you know this? Just my understanding of the system. Looked at page 5 of this thread with each team's rating. Adjust for HCA - and review any teams schedule. Any match that falls outside 'projection' was part of the 10% + matches that are excluded.

See this description of the methodology in this thread, and the consequences of it. bluepenguin is exactly right, these matches are basically ignored. Look at those Colorado results...losses to Northwestern, South Dakota and UCLA, but they get ignored and Colorado ends up in the top 10.

There are probably several political reasons why this will not happen. There is one major practical problem with this system. Approximately 10% of all matches are excluded from the formula - as if the results did not occur. Here is a partial list of matches that would not count (winner listed first).
Arizona State vs. Colorado Arizona State vs. Oregon Creighton vs. Colorado Gonzaga vs. Loyola Marymount Marquette vs. Florida Michigan vs. Duke Michigan vs. Nebraska Northwestern vs. Colorado Ohio State vs. Illinois Ohio State vs. Nebraska Oklahoma vs. Texas Pacific vs. Loyola Marymount (2X) Penn State vs. Wisconsin San Diego vs. Loyola Marymount Santa Clara vs. Duke South Dakota vs. Colorado UCLA vs. Colorado UCLA vs. Illinois USC vs. Colorado Utah vs. Oregon Utah vs. Washington Virginia Tech vs. Illinois
If I was the coach (fan) of any of the teams that won one of these matches - I would have a problem.
Has the methodology been published somewhere? How do you know this? So its not really true to say the ranking system ignores those outliers, as that gives the impression they were not involved in the attempt to find the optimal ranking. They were part of the data base, it's just that the optimal ranking simply cannot explain all instances of who beat whom. Some results remain unexplained and those are the outliers listed for this ranking scheme. You could readjust the rankings to accomodate these outliers, but that would result in an even larger set of outliers. Basically, if properly optimized, there is no way to come up with a linear ranking system that works perfectly if there are intransitive results -- ie., surprises -- which there always will be. You can only minimize the number of errors. The ranking system provided is the one that is most consistent with who beats whom and the outliers are the matches that aren't explained by the ranking. Now, to determine an optimal result, you have to have a cost function, implicit or explicit, that penalizes a particular ranking system for getting wrong results by some amount. Then you try to find the ranking where those penalties are minimized over all. I can't tell if this cost if Stanford loses to FSU is the same as if Lipscomb beats Washington. I also can't tell if there were multiple ranking systems that resulted in the same number of errors, and some attempt was made to select among those ranking systems by picking the ranking with the least egregious errors. The fact that the errors are largely near the top of the rankings suggests that there was some weighting of the cost function based on the kinds of errors made. I think outliers are interesting in and of themselves though. Colorado for instance appears no less than 6 times! Far more than any other team. Does it have an unusually strong home advantage? Or has the team progressed or regressed a lot? Or are they just wildly inconsistent? It would be interesting to know if many of the outliers also occurred early in the season as teams are still gelling. Some teams may just be bad matchups for other teams.
