So what happened here? I'm not trying to be rude, as I young coach I wonder what could have happened in the past 5 years or so that Notre Dame goes from an elite program to a 6-23 program. I'm sure Coach Brown didn't forget how to coach. How do you go more than 20 years in a row with a winning record, win Conference Coach of the Year 6 times, and then seemingly fall so far?

One thing ... bad recruiting (unless they lost scholarships). Maybe an assistant coach left who was their main recruiter?

This has not only happened in volleyball but it has happened to people in life too. I don't think there's one answer. Hope she can bounce back or hire a top recruiter

What struck me from their roster was they only have one kid from Indiana. (well she's originally from the state) I would think with all of the great talent there, they could get some of those players to go to ND. Isn't Notre Dame a dream school for many kids in the state?
It seems that recently they have been getting their in-state recruiting butts kicked by Purdue.(and many other schools)

Were they ever elite is probably the first question.
Yes... some VERY good teams went through Notre Dame, but that happened at places like Wazzu as well.

Then she transferred to Wisconsin and became the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

I have to think that it's no coincidence that Notre Dame getting worse has happened at the same time the B1G has created its own television network and drawn nearly even with the Pac-10 in terms of volleyball talent. If you're a highly-rated high school player from the Midwest, where would you rather go - a B1G school where you can play against great competition and be on TV all throughout the Midwest, or Notre Dame, which plays in the mediocre ACC? Staying out of the B1G might be good for Notre Dame football, but it definitely doesn't benefit many of their other sports.

Notre Dame had one really good year on the backs of an outstanding senior class in... 2005, I think? Since then, up and down in the BIG EAST before the step up in the ACC. At no point since the dominant season would I even say that ND was the premier program in the BIG EAST. That was more Louisville (who were nearly as good as the Irish in '05) and Cincinnati, even SJU had a couple of really good years.
I'd also question how much the Integer Network has to do with B1G schools beating out ND for recruits. I think just the prestige of the programs would have a lot to do with it; I think the conference came to prominence before the TV network, but I might be mistaken.

Is the Notre Dame campus life primarily secular? Or do you feel the presence of the Almighty at every corner?
I attended a Catholic junior high school and they made us pray...a lot. These prayer sessions caused me to constantly groan and mutter, "What the f***?!?!" I was one of the few non-Catholics at the school.

It all went downhill after Jim McLaughlin left Brown's staff.

People often forget how competitive ACC is. UND landed practically at the bottom, while Louisville ended with a losing conference record.
