I don't like the lion quote, but I did like her self-observation about her extrovertedness and hyperness: "I finally realized, 'No, you're not.' "
I also like McLaughlin's quote on initial ability and final ability. As a former engineer, I can appreciate initial values (x_0) and final values (x_f) as well as boundary value issues as I go through calculations in my head. Life is not static. It's constantly changing. In sports, every coach wants you to achieve a certain "final" value but the damn kids can't understand it because they think they're already good enough.
Coach: "I want you to be there, but you're here." Dumb stupid kid: "I'm already there." Coach: "No, you're not." Dumb stupid kid: "How do I get there?" Coach: "You have to do x, y, and z." Dumb stupid kid: "Okay." (Thinking to herself, "This blows. It's just busy work.")

I don't like the lion quote, but I did like her self-observation about her extrovertedness and hyperness: "I finally realized, 'No, you're not.' " Of course, next to Summer Ross, with whom she was continuously paired as a freshman, anyone would look like an extrovert. Some of it is just maturation - as we grow older, and necessarily experience failures and disappointments, and have to overcome challenges, the natural tendency is to become less boisterous and more thoughtful and introspective. Now, Cassie Strickland does "yell to the whole gym," but that is just who she is...

Really liked the article - a lot of great quotes. One favorite from Jim “At some point great athletes become more responsible and accountable for all the things they have to do, the mindset of going hard every play. She’s acquired that. It’s been pretty cool to see.”
You can see that attitude in the team, and especially in the women who have spent years in the program. Frustrations with bad plays and celebrations of good plays are brief and do not change the mental approach to the next point. That may sound detached, but watching a player like Krista play, you realize that it is the exact opposite.

I am excited for her future whether it is with the National team or a successful professional career. She is amazing to watch, but I hope she transitions well into the International scene because we all know how that goes...

Kelsey Robinson is one year ahead of her. I wonder if Vansant has a chance to pass her on the national team.

This is an article that I think every college player should read.

The 2020 Olympics roster, however, is a possibility. Robinson was just part of a 12-man group of our best athletes that won the WCH gold. Not sure that qualifies as a "big stretch" for Rio.

Its a big stretch for Vansant almost impossible, but not for Robinson who already knows Karch's system. And is gaining significant experience in international volleyball.

Krista is a better overall player, but LOWE, if she can work on her blocking, has a better chance at making the Olympic team imo.
Vansant still has a great shot though

Robinson jumped right in, so dont see how it would be near impossible for VanSant. To be honest all Vansant would have to do to be right in the mix would be to outplay Robinson. That sure doesnt seem unfeasible. Assuming Hodge comes back and gets in shape, You have Larson, Hill, Hodge and then probably Robinson. Dont see how Vansant couldnt give Robo at least a run for her money.
