I have a feeling we will have some good fortune come our way this next 6 months, and next season will be more apparent on roles. What good fortune? I told Santa instead of presents under the tree for me just bring good fortune (players, championship, etc.) for the Texas Volleyball program in 2015 so we don't have to deal with the PSU fans another consecutive year. When I went to look under the tree Christmas morning there were no presents from Santa so I have a feeling we will see good fortune!! LOL

Somebody has to break the VICE GRIP PSU has going on Why? Shouldn't this be a learning experience for other volleyball coaches? What is Russ Rose doing to enable Penn State to dominate? Other coaches could examine his coaching and emulate it. This is how all athletic progress is made. When all football teams were running the single wing offense in the 1940's, George Halas came up with the "T" formation, was successful with it, and all of the other NFL teams came around to using it. In volleyball, when the slide, the two person serve receive, the 5-1 attack became successful, other teams rushed to adopt them. Perhaps the kind of player you recruit needs to change. Russ is showing the way, but people are complaining rather than learning.

I keep looking back to the first Chinese exhibition match the team played in the middle of the season and remember coming away impressed with Dalton running a 5-1 and with Baker playing all 6 rotations at Opposite. (That's the match that Eckerman, Bell, Collins, Ogbogu, and McCoy were "suspended" for breaking team rules and Neal being held out due to injury.) That match foreshadowed what kind of system Texas will run next year IMO. What stood out to me about that match was: - Texas running a faster and lower offense to the pins (even with out-of-system sets) and the OHs that played in that match (Lopez, Prieto-Cerame, and Baker) being more successful with that tempo - Molly consistently utilizing her slide attacks - Baker's passing on serve-receive in every rotation and her blocking on the right pin - Dalton's setting to the pins (faster, lower, and consistent), her ability to attack on 2, and her blocking on the right pin but most importantly, it allowed her to get into a setting rhythm for the entire match Personally, I am not a fan of the 6-2 and hope that Dalton (Setter) and Baker (6 rotation Opp) are well enough next season to run a 5-1. I'd want Molly at M1 (to run her slide attacks), Chiaka at M2, McCoy at Libero and then let the OHs (Lopez, Prieto-Cerame, White, Bedart-Ghani) battle it out for the L1/L2 spots. I was happy with the improvement Neal made this year, but her blocking in the front row will always be a liability for the team, especially against opponents with strong right-side attackers. Therefore, I'd want her only as a back-row DS who has the option to attack. But I agree, if their injuries drag on (Dalton and Baker), I hope Elliott does not try to piece meal a season out of them.... If Baker's best play during the season was during that match against the Chinese exhibition match, I am not impressed. That Chinese team was not good. As I recall they were missing 3 of their top players. I do not understand why Baker was offered a scholarship to play volleyball at Texas. If I remember correctly, she transferred from Tennessee during the off season and then misses spring workouts, etc because she needed surgery? And she's not fully recovered so she basically took up a roster spot this season.
In hindsight, could Elliott have brought in a reliable outside hitter that would have provided competition to Neal and Pilar?
And my question is whether volleyball programs require transfers to pass a physical before being offered a scholarship? I agree Baker will never become a go to hitter, but if she passes consistently and terminates semi-consistently she could be a good right side hitter. I think she already passes fairly well along with having good blocking and being tall. I could see her playing all 6 rotations as an Opp next year. Now that Eckerman is gone, we can speed up the offense significantly which benefits almost every other player on the roster, including the setters. If Dalton/Baker can get healthy I see Texas just reloading, not rebuilding. With more consistent passing and a healthier Dalton/Baker, we can spread out the offense even more and become a more middle centric team until White/Neal/Pilar become more consistent.

This will be the first year in a long time that I will let go of any expectations that I have for the team! I'm just going to enjoy seeing how the team unfolds next year, how players develop, and what kind of team will show up at the end of the year during the tournament. I'm preparing myself to be surprised!

Moving forward I hope we may have: 1. True leadership in back row that takes control and is the rock for serve receive. Hopefully someone steps up because I am not sold on current situation. 2. Injuries to Baker and Dalton do not drag on, and if so, do not try to piece meal a season out of them. 3. Utilize Ogbogu and McCage as focus for next year and let the OHs be complimentary until proven. 4. Setting be more consistent than this year (unless some one new came in it is what it is).
Personally, I am not a fan of the 6-2 and hope that Dalton (Setter) and Baker (6 rotation Opp) are well enough next season to run a 5-1. I'd want Molly at M1 (to run her slide attacks), Chiaka at M2, McCoy at Libero and then let the OHs (Lopez, Prieto-Cerame, White, Bedart-Ghani) battle it out for the L1/L2 spots. So, if you're Chloe Collins, what do you do? Ride the pine for two seasons as she and Dalton are both juniors next season? My biggest concern is that if Dalton is ever named the starter in a 5-1 offense prior to the start of the season, then Collins transfers and we are left with one setter on the roster.

I'm preparing myself to be surprised! Don't sweat it. We are hosting a regional in 2015, which is something we haven't done the last 2 seasons. While the team might be younger at the pins, the middles and setters will be much more experienced. While Texas might not be a national top 4 seed next season, a top 4 seed will have to come to the Austin regional and earn their way to the Final Four.

Texas should try a 5-2 to satisfy both setters, we can't afford to have Collins transfer out. We all know she not going to just stand on the bench for 2 more years.
What do Texas fans think of the 5-2 for 2015 with a faster offense?

What do Texas fans think of the 5-2 for 2015 with a faster offense? I like the idea of the 5-2 because it satisfies the issue Southie brought up a couple posts above, and if Baker is capable of playing she can be either an OH or RS depending on what the freshman bring.
I still have a gut feeling that we are going to get an impact transfer. No I don't have any real inside info.......just a gut feeling.

I hope we get a BIG transfer but really hoping the freshman can come in and play big roles. Texas will need at least one to play at a high level like Mary Kate from OSU did.

I hope we get a BIG transfer but really hoping the freshman can come in and play big roles. Texas will need at least one to play at a high level like Mary Kate from OSU did. Definitely need a freshman to be like Faucette or Eckerman. A medical redshirt for Baker would free up that spot for a top transfer. Elliott cannot make program decisions just to make both setters happy. We will see if a healthy Dalton can reach her potential, but a healthy Dalton means zilch if she will not set her middles they way Collins did this season. At the end of the season, Collins was the most consistent setter and with her quickness, would be the best setter in a 5-1 (like Moriarty) except for her height. But her height is a major problem for this program. Like Neal, Texas can get away with it against most opponents, but will be exploited against top teams. Hopefully, Elliott is reevaluating his recruiting decisions and the makeup of roster positions for the future. His setter decision for 2017 seems to be a good step forward.
