So Skjodt got gatorade Indiana POY, but Tionna is picked above her by USA today. Interesting. The competition continues in the B1G. Well, Tawa picked the USA Today team, and he ranked Williams #6 and Skjodt #26. Gatorade POYs are chosen by a different group and they look at HS career AND grades AND community service. Skjodt's profile was probably just more impressive in that vein than Williams. What happens to scholarships if Hannah redshirts next year? Without a Hannah Juley redshirt, the scholarship availability looks like this: 2016: 1 - Vacated by Morey - slated for Dodge 2017: 4 - Vacated by Blake, Carlini, Kriskova, Nelson - slated for Hilley, Loberg, Rettke, Whalen 2018: 2 - Vacated by Blake & Fricano 2019: 5 - Vacated by Duello, Juley, Morgan, Saunders, Williams 2020: 1 - Vacated by Dodge If Juley redshirts, move a schollie from 2019 to 2020 - so we go from 4, 2, 5, 1 to 4, 2, 4, 2 - not ideal, but more even. If Duello starts you got issues, if she plays 6, stick a fork in the Badgers!! That being said, Carlini could make me look good!!! I walked by a few trees in Greeley when we played, gotta have a couple seasoned options to fill graduation losses.....I could be wrong about Duello but don't think so!!! Missouri Gatorade POY, AVCA/UA HS AA, PrepVolleyball #9 Senior Ace... uh, okay. You and Sheff will just have to agree to disagree on that.

I was thinking next year. If Hannah redshirts, which seems likely, does that mean there is one year of scholarship not used next year? Would it have to be senior coming in? Could a transfer possibly happen? Would it make sense to use it on a defensive specialist of high caliber? That kind of thing.

2018 I think you mean Bates. It would be nice to see a Kvas type walk on for next year. Two defensive specialists seems thin. Although how is EJ defensively? Is she an option? Yep, you're right. I mean Bates. I was sort of wondering whether we'd see EJ as a DS/serving specialist type. As it stands, with only one DS, we need two of our 3 pin hitters to be able to play back row, AND we need one of our middles to be able to serve and play back row for half a rotation. Haleigh can serve, but Kvas served for her >50% of the time (the rest of the time she subbed for Ellen, but that was less common). I know Haleigh wants to be a 6-rotation middle, so I trust she'll continue to work on her serving and back row play. Kriskova was a 6-rotation hitter, and Bates has proven she can play all around. Still, we're running awfully thin. It'd be nice to walk on or transfer in another DS.

I hope coach Sheffield tests the 2015 Badgers with an Illini-like pre-conference schedule so the baby Badgers grow up up quickly. I think Wisconsin will be one of the 3 top teams in the Big 10+4, along with PSU and NebU. Half of their pre-conference is already spoken for. There's a B1G/ACC tourney with Wisconsin and Minnesota against Notre Dame and Louisville, and a B1G/Pac-12 tourney with Wisconsin and Maryland against Washington and USC. Both of those tourneys will be in the second of a 4-year commitment, and both will be hosted in Madison in 2015. Additionally, Wisconsin has the HotelRED invitational, their home tourney. So there's one other place they could go for a tourney. After this season, I'd kind of like to see them play BYU. I'd love for them to play Hawaii. We'd go and stay with the Rainbow Fam. It'd be a blast.

My predictions for starters: MH: Haleigh Nelson MH: Tori Blake or Williams (Blake will have the college experience on her side) OH: Kelli Bates OH: Romana Kriskova (if healthy) RS: Taylor Fricano S: Lauren Carlini L: Taylor Morey DS: Amber McDonald (backrow for Fricano) I predict they will be at the top of the BIG along with Nebraska, Penn State, OSU & Illinois This lineup finishes 10th in the conference next year.

Yes because a team with the best setter and libero in the conference can finish 10th. Along with returning starting OH1 and MH2. That makes sooooo much sense

Tiresome. Should have stayed in hiding. We miss consistency and intangibles on the RS, but may improve block and production in the long run. Have to produce ability to terminate and block in OH1/2 (Chapman). She has been the reason we've won many a match, but the reason we couldn't get over the PSU hump. I'd argue we also need a better production out of Haleigh against better teams, like PSU. She disappears, other than her block. Tionna hopefully.

I'm really wondering how Erin fits in next year. Since we are short in backrow, she could be important, but I don't know much about her defense. Getting another setter on the floor is a good thing as long as we don't lose any fire power.

As a fan of another team but one who has really enjoyed and appreciated the UW team's play I wonder if the newcomers will be able to duplicate how well the departing seniors were able to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. Plugging in new players, who may or may not be better talents, is not necessarily the point. Will they contribute to the team play as well as the departing seniors? There were a lot of BT teams that had [on paper] as good or maybe even better "talent" but UW won the championship as a team. If molding a cohesive, everyone has a role and does it very well, team was easy I doubt UW competes as well and wins as much the last two years. It will be interesting to see if your coach can just "plug and play" with the new players. He's good enough a coach to do that. Anyway IMHO the value of the departing seniors to UW's success can not and should not be underestimated.

I think we all recognize that chemistry was a great aspect of this teams play. It was a fabulous group of seniors -- my favorite in almost 20 years of following the badgers. They really were so tight knit and fought so hard and selflessly for each other.
But kids graduate, so what can you do? It doesn't look like there will be a drop off in talent at least. One thing that gives me some calm is Sheff. He will recruit the type of players that have the attitude he wants. They won't be the same mix of personalities, for sure, but he spends a fair amount of effort finding the ways to motivate each individual and yet get the team pulling in the same direction. And he seems to have a bit more nuanced insight than most into that side of coaching.
