I really hope Maloney can translate to the college game well. She is extremely quick on defense and a great receiver. Nebraska will improve their passing for 2015. It's not like Nebraska wasn't already one of the best passing teams. Even if they get better at that, it's not going to improve their play as a team all that much. However, if they get just a little bit better at killing the ball, they'll get a lot better as a team. Is it just a reflex to blame passing for all woes? Are you all setters or something?

While they have their moments (who doesnt) overall they are a very good passing and defensive team. They need to kill the ball more, part of that is improved setting right and back, and part is more physical kids.

Any truth to the post that Briana Holman (MB from LSU)is truly considering Nebraska? I would assume Texas would be her #1. OBW, why is she transferring from LSU?

Is Texas in the picture since she's from Houston?

I can imagine she would be. But Texas has both their middles returning. They don't need an elite middle like we do

She'll visit, at least.

Me too....I think she is underrated by Husker fans. Wouild like to see her at OH position opposite Kadie. Interesting that John avoided that for sister rivalry. I would encourage the opposite. I think that competition would be great. Interesting considering at the end of the year, Fien was probably the better attacker then Kadie. Now if you move Amber left opposite Kadie, is Fien out of the line-up? You don't see many all big ten players get moved to the bench for players who struggled to play at a high level. Sure doesn't sound like a very wise move. We don't know if Amber can be a solid leftside hitter at this level, and we are now putting her in for a first team all Big player??? Nebraska has every bit the need in the middle than they do at RS. I think it remains to be seen where they play Foecke and I think it should remain to be seen. Dorothy....you and I have been around the game for a long time. You can't put up big numbers if you haven't been given the opportunity can you? You are absolutely correct. Put Fien in Ambers position! Do you seriously believe she would have done any better? I don't.

I like that the OP kept Foecke in the middle. We just might need her there, even though she might belong on the pins. Hall and Haggerty both had great matches against Washington, but can they be consistently elite? Would also love to see either Keil or Larson break out, even though it wasn't in the cards this year. Is Reeves a potential redshirt? Probably another toss up for the middles. Expect Hall and Haggerty to have more consistent nights with Hunter setting. Actually, Hunter and Larson have a great connection, so we might see Larson edging them both at MH. I'm not going to set my expectations too high for Hall/Haggerty. I think Hunter will get them better looks, but where have our middles been the past 2 years? I think Hall and Haggerty have put on disappearing acts in the past, and I don't expect that to change over night. As for Larson, she's got an uphill battle to climb at this point. A new setter isn't going to solve all her problems. From what I've heard from Cook, Larson is a performer under the lights, but not so much a workhorse. She's not as physically strong as Hall, Haggerty, or Keil.

Foecke plays in Iowa's smallest class. I know she averaged 13 points a set in one of their state tournament games. Not saying she wouldn't/couldn't put up similar numbers at a bigger school, but even if Hodson had played HS ball, it'd be hard to replicate the numbers Foecke put down just because of the competition she was up against. Here are her hitting stats from high school: SEASON | KILLS/SET | HITTING % | Freshman | 4.07 | .419 | Sophomore | 5.43 | .519 | Junior | 6.08 | .569 | Senior | 6.45 | .635 |
One may discount those numbers because of the competition she played against in high school, but at the 2013 FIVB Girls' World Championship, where Team USA placed second (the first time a youth/junior USA volleyball team of either gender medaled in a world championship), Foecke had 84 kills and hit .449 in eight matches, leading Team USA to the silver medal. In the championship match against China, both Foecke and Molly Haggerty led the team with 9 points apiece. If I remember correctly, Hodson was the team captain at that tournament. I'm confident in her offensive game with the stats and experience that she brings to Nebraska (we've all seen the video on Youtube where she knocks two people out in the same play), but I'm interested in seeing how she develops as a back-row player. Both she and Chesney McClellan have been quoted saying that they chose Nebraska because they feel Nebraska prepares players to have a great defensive and passing game better than any other school (see Team USA's current lineup of primary and secondary passers). John Kawa says she possesses the "agility of a libero," so it will be interesting to see if she plays all around or gets subbed out. I'm sure we can expect to see her at the serving line, though, as she has a wicked jump serve a la Jordan Larson and Kelsey Robinson.

What are people's thoughts on Cook running a 6-2?
TBH, I'm not much of a fan of that system. Besides Stanford's modified 6-2 where both setters became opposites in the front row years ago, I don't recall a team winning the title with a contemporary 6-2. Does anyone think Cook will experiment with it in the pre-season? It certainly would give the players an opportunity to showcase their abilities at different positions. If it becomes a pre-season reality, who's the other setter? Would Cook look at Brooke Smith, when both Justine and Alexa were setters in high school? Justine was great at setting out-of-system plays for us this year, and if she became a setter, that would give Maloney a shot at libero. OFC, this scenario would rely heavily on Maloney's prowess as libero, but people are talking about her being the next Banwarth, Miyashiro, Ailes, Hagglund.
If this were the case, could a possible 6-2 lineup look like this:
STARTERS: S1: Hunter S2: Wong-Orantes OPP1: A. Rolfzen OPP2: Foecke OHs: K. Rolfzen & Fien MBs: Hall & Meghan Haggerty L: Maloney
BACKUPS: S: Smith OPP: Larson OH: Maddie Haggerty, Ostrander, and Boender MB: Keil, Reeves DS: Ethridge, Townsend

You forgot Albrecht in the equation for DS/OH. Why would you take your best passer out of the equation with a 6-2? I know she set in high school, but I don't know if you could ever move your proven libero and leave an unproven college passer at libero.
