LMU had 8 aces against the Gophers!
The Gophers had only been aced ~11 times total before the matches this weekend. With the 3 aces for Rice they've given up as many aces in the past two matches as they had in the previous 8 matches combined.

In an addendum to my comments yesterday, though, I would say that if Martin is pounding kill after kill at a high percentage, just keep setting her the ball until the other team can stop it. 26 kills in three games. Wow. I know she can do it, but that is still really impressive. How are you guys adjusting to the Gophers playing a three game match? It has been a while for them. I guess Rice is pretty solid, given that they took down UNC pretty effectively. Still, the Gophers need to keep up their effort against the Tar Heels. If nothing else, they need to keep up with the Badgers, who are 2-0 in the ACC on the season.

The Gophes are likely to be in plenty more long matches this season.
They expect that their defense will pretty regularly get them extra attacks so they will relatively often dump free balls to the other side if they're not confident they can get an effective attack on a particular play.
In some respects that makes the defense of opposing teams look more effective since they get digs on much easier attacks than they would get if the Gophers didn't have so much confidence in their own defense.

>-(Gorf)-<[} link=board=general&thread=1095520413&start=33#2 date=1095524738]LMU had 8 aces against the Gophers! And only THREE errors. As for the Gophers style--all those long rallies may end up taking a toll on them. They could use some easier ways to get points. It does appear Rice is better than I was giving them credit.

As for the Gophers style--all those long rallies may end up taking a toll on them. They could use some easier ways to get points. I hopeful that they'll be able to do that as the season progresses. They're looking to be Wild Rice rather than Minute Rice. I like what I've "seen" of their team in the matches this weekend. They seem to have a good defense and a really diversified offense. They we're close to having 5 players with 20+ attacks each. They had 3, with another two both at 19 attacks. Watching their scoring against North Carolina they seemed to be able to get strings of kills from multiple players throughout the match.
