Penn State and Hancock will win on the scoreboard. BYU has already won.

If PSU cannot get multiple hitter positions going, BYU could well win this match. This has a very 2013 NC Match feel to it, where a lot of people thought Wisky was totally over-matched yet ended up giving PSU a really tough fight. Could've easily gone the other way. I expect BYU will play similarly and could very well win. But, if PSU can make BYU one-dimensional and play clean offense, getting multiple hitters going, PSU can roll. To my surprise, it was Courtney/Frantti that were on fire last night for PSU while the middles fizzled out. That cannot happen tomorrow night if PSU wants to win; having only the left's really hitting plays right into BYU's biggest strength. If PSU can get, say, Courtney or Frantti, Grant or Washington, and Whitney going... could be a long night for the Cougs. Going to be a very interesting match. Hopefully, PSU earns its 6th title in 8 years. Let's go PSU!

The difference in this game is not going to be Hancock's serves or Washington's offense or Hamson's blocks and attacks.
And it won't be the Olmstead 'stash. It will be Funky Blue Glasses Guy. Giuseppe Vinci.
That guy strikes me as a volleyball genuis. He coaches with both the mens and womens teams at BYU. Watch him during timeouts. Olmstead and the other assistants gather around him and he looks like he explains what the hell the deal is. Then Olmstead meets with the players and makes adjustments and the next thing you know BYU is back on top or winning the set..or the match.
Plus the sumbitch has a beard and works at BYU....and his damn name is Giuseppe.
If there's one volleyball genius who can take down Granddaddy Rose, its superhero Giuseppe.
And any man who has the chutzpah to walk into an arena full of people on national TV wearing those funky spectacles is a rockstar.

Conversely, President Worthen looks like he just came from Animal House central casting call for a college president.

I'm sure he is a terrific coach, but you may have crossed the line into man crush

BYU could give PSU trouble the same way Illinois and McMahon gave them trouble. The block, the size of BYU can just grind you down. Hampson can hit over the block like no one else PSU has seen this year. Rose is going to have to find their vulnerabilities and go after them. It's not so much that PSU has to get a lot of players going -- they just have to find one hole in that BYU block. I'm not sure what it is. BYU's backcourt also looked quite good against Texas. They play hard and smart. I really don't see a weakness on that team. They serve tough, their block is beautifully formed, and they have two top shelf outsides in Gray and Hamson. Why exactly was this team unseeded anyway? They do rely on swing blocking and I think that can be exploited by quick offense and misdirection, which are things Hancock does really well. If TX had a setter like that (let alone her serving) they would have had a much better chance. If PSU cannot get multiple hitter positions going, BYU could well win this match. PSU has way more attackers that can hurt you than Texas and certainly Nebraska. If PSU is passing you just arent going to see great blockers camped on hitters. In the end, PSU just too good in too many ways for BYU. I really like this BYU team a lot, but see PSU in 3 or 4.

Hopefully, PSU earns its 6th title in 8 years. Let's go PSU! BYU was impressive ,for sure. Texas was not impressive, for sure. BYU's freshman setter and backcourt seemed shaky to me. As always it will be a match decided by the serve receive and passing battle and PSU and Texas are not equivalents in that department. A freshman setter who has not even started all year goes up against one of the best playing the position. People were overly impressed by Stanford's dismantling of Florida and underwhelmed by PSU's tight contest with Wisconsin. Florida and UW are not equivalents, as we saw last night. PSU is battle tested and "been there, done that." BYU is in rarefied air and has a day to think about it. RR and Olmstead have one day to game plan against an unfamiliar opponent. Not much time and the advantage goes to RR. If BYU just comes out and "lets it all hang out" they have a puncher's chance at knocking out the champ. Their big block could be the wild card that keeps them in the match. On paper I see PSU in three. But they don't play the match on paper. They play it on fake plastic wood.
