BYU has a taller team than PSU and are even playing a little closer to their school, so I think PSU could actually be the underdog if they didn't have their legendary coach. I want to congratulate BYU on their wonderful season and I rooted for the Cougars against Texas. It would be amazing if they could pull off one more victory. I have never seen a VB coach as clever and crafty as Russ Rose. He finds ways to exploit other teams that go beyond explanation. He makes experienced players look like they are just learning the game. So let's hope BYU plays their best and we have a match worthy of the Championship. Doesn't he teach at least one course at PSU in the off season? If so, does it have anything to do with coaching strategies, player development, or well, anything at all to do with coaching? If so, I think most Div. I coaches should crash the class. The man is killing the rest of us.

Winning feels great, even after so much over the last few years. I hope the girls add another win tomorrow night and add to the trophy case at Penn State.

I'm glad PSU spanked Stanford avenging my Gators, but now I would like BYU to win it all, a program that never has before. I think their block could defenitly cause some trouble if they can serve well enough against PSU, and limit Hancock's service runs/side out at a decent rate.

If so, I think most Div. I coaches should crash the class. The man is killing the rest of us. He teaches a class on ETHICS. He also does a 2-3 day seminar that includes Dunning from Stanford and a few other old school coaches called "The Art of Coaching" that discusses and reviews drills for specific player development skills, strategy, and overall volleyball lessions learned. I attended one of these seminars and it was packed with all level coaches within a three hour drive.

If I don't have an emotional attachment to one team or the other then I'm interested in the process more than the outcome. I love to see a sport played really well or a player or team who maybe lacking in talent displays "grit" and determination and rises above what us armchair pundits thought they could do. I just sit back and marvel at the year after year excellence of [for example] Stanford VB in the 90's, UNC women's soccer, UConn women's b'ball etc. Watching players and teams play a "beautiful game" is inspiring and aesthetically pleasing. I just don't get it when people say they "hate" so and so because they are excellent in what they do. I sure hope they don't "hate" and wish for failure in physicians or engineers or teachers. Watching PSU play volleyball is like watching flight via turbine engine. Impressive, and a remarkable feat, the creation of such an engine. But watching teams like Japan, Oregon 2012, and Wisconsin 2013 play volleyball is like watching flight via the wings of an eagle.
It's fun to see coaches skillfully adapt systems to compensate for gaps in lineups/weaknesses. You see some creative and artistic things happen in these situations. When you get the same type of pieces year in and year out because you're PSU, it takes some of that unknown, compensation, artistry out of the picture.
So, yeah there is definitely a wow moment for a volleyball enthusiast who watches the turbine engine that is PSU, but there is a dynamic beauty to the way an eagle's wings work too. People are tired of watching the engine, even if it is incredibly and meticulously assembled.
Makes it seem like Penn State somehow achieves through robotic efficiency, when in fact they've had very gritty girls, who Rose has developed to a high level, and has allowed them to compete, while being loose and focused. Their opponents have often been so fixated on beating them, like Texas when Destinee Hooker was a Senior and this year's Stanford team that they played tight at the wrong times. Hancock is a fighter, who will do anything to win. Deja McClendon was a joyous presence last year, and her 4 years. There were so many women who came through who were spontaneous, pedal-to-the-medal, exuberant personalities, that Russ was able to challenge and make them play together, that it was pure fun to watch. And Penn State never did the braggadocio "Hook 'em Horns" salutes, or the dance in your face Stanford post-game victory stuff. Those teams bring an ""attitude" that says "we're bad, we're better". Penn State just goes out and does it.

PSU has the better athletes, but I really think BYU matches up incredibly well agsinst them. And they do have a few things going for them.
Underrated, unseeded by the tournament despite being in the top 15 all year and even some of that in the top 10. It has them fighting Being this much of an underdog, they really have nothing to lose. They've proved they are there, and should be there, despite what people say. The pressure is all on PSU. They've been there before, are tied for the top in NCAA championships, and a huge favorite. BYU also travels extremely well. Mormons, esp BYU mormons love their volleyball. They will be out in force cheering and cheering loud for their team. I would bank on a much larger BYU crowd than PSU crowd.
And in terms of just straight volleyball, BYU matches up extremley well against them. Their big block will hurt their 2 OH's. Hell, even in the Texas game, they didn't play their best, they have a good middle attack yet they didn't get that going at all.
