Florida State finished 2014 with a Sweet Sixteen finish and runner up to the ACC.
Final 30-3 season ranked in AVCA Top 10 Coaches Poll and RPI of 3 heading into NCAA.. Earned #6 seed in tournament and lost to BYU 1-3 in sweet sixteen
6 players named to ALL ACC: 1st Team: Mosher, Walch, Burrington 2nd Team: Horton, Wright All Freshman Team: Kubura
5 players named to EAST REGION TEAM: Mosher, Walch, Burrington and Horton Kubura- HM Coach of Year East Region: Chris Poole
4 Players named AVCA ALL AMERICANs
2nd Team: Walch Honorable Mention: Mosher, Burrington, Horton
Senior CLASS Award: Mosher Top 10 finalist named as 2nd Team All American for this award.
FSU will greatly miss their two senior captains.. libero, Mosher and setter, Wickstrom..who were both starters with the FSU team that made the Final Four in 2011, Round 2 (2012) and Sweet Sixteen 2013 and 2014. Mosher was a 3 year captain and Wickstom 2 years.. they both had great leadership on and off the court.. those intangible things that are hard to describe and really hard to replace.
They also earned 2 ACC Championship Rings and 2 runner ups to ACC during their 4 years as starters..
Looking to 2015:
Returning:
OH1 Walch -Senior, AA 2nd team OH2 Horton-Junior, AAHM MB-Burrington- Junior, AAHM MB-Wright-Senior 2nd team All ACC Setter- Luke-Junior Right Side Kubura- Soph, All Freshman ACC, East Region HM Right Side Vaughn- Senior Right Side Hauer- Senior
Replacing Mosher at Libero will be sophomore libero, Cecile Woie that served as DS in 2014. She had good reps in 2014 filling in back row play for Walch and Horton at times throughout 2014.
Replacing Wickstrom at setter will be an incoming 6'1 left handed freshman, Brianne Burkert from Texas Advantage.. great resume with high level club play-led her team to a national championship at nationals this past summer.
Also transferring in Jan '15 will be 6'3 OH, Christine Ambrose from Purdue..she red shirted at Purdue-so four years of playing eligibility at FSU.. she will start spring training with team in January as a red shirt freshman
Florida State is returning all key hitters, middles... how they adjust with loss of Mosher at libero and Wickstrom as starting setter will be the key..

Wickstrom won't be hard to replace, but Mosher will.
Ambrose is really good. They'll definitely be a physical team.

I think this team could be better than the one this year if they pass well and Poole finally goes with the 5-1 using Burkett? Or whatever the tall freshman setter from Texas' name is. At this point he's just shooting himself in the foot with the 6-2 with middles who can certainly score behind the setter and good tall setters.

He believes in the 6-2 and having strong hitters across pins. Note: It worked well for Sagula and UNC this year too Triangle.. BTW... Congrats to your team on a strong season ! You never know.. he may get this new setter in the gym this summer and change his mind.. I do know he will have the best players on the floor for the opportunity to win every match...

North Carolina has to run a 6-2, their setters are would be hit over routinely if they played front row and are good defensive players and most importantly set a similar ball. Neither is better, unlike this season with Wickstrom clearly playing better than Luke. Vaughn should not have been playing, she is not strong and consistent enough on the rightside and this team would have done better if Wickstrom was allowed to be the strong, crafty leader she proved to be at the College Training program. You shouldn't just run a 6-2 so you have blockers across the front, and it will be especially detrimental next year since they lose Mosher who set a great second ball. He may not have the best players on the court if he wants to utilize subs and stay in the system he's been comfortable with. I don't have a problem with the 6-2, but using just because it's popular and takes allows for more hitters (ahem, Texas) doesn't make sense.

May be interesting to see her on right side with Kubura possibly this fall. I agree with you about Vaughn.. too unpredictable... and was not consistent on that right side. Vaughn is really a middle that got moved to right side..so cutting her some slack.. Walch and Horton IMO have pretty much locked up the OH positions and both are six rotation players. Not sure how strong Ambrose is with passing and floor defense...so possibly Ambrose on the right side at first and then move to OH after Walch graduates in December.

Chris ran a 5-1 at Arkansas when he had the athletes for it (Tina Rico, Ning Zhao, Roberta Tarnauskaite) and only went to the 6-2 when he had setters who were pretty significant blocking liabilities. He may be a 6-2 convert at this point, but I think he'll play whatever system fits his personnel best. A 6'1" lefty setter probably has him remembering Tina Rico at Arkansas ... but who knows?

FSU finishes the 2014 season at #10 in the AVCA Coaches Poll and #3 in RPI with their 30-3 record.
I am disappointed they ranked lower than Nebraska in the final poll.. Nebraska with 10 losses finished at #8...Oh Well.... on to next season..

I remember him talking about the 5-1 he ran in Arkansas.. At that time too remember he did not have the fire power across the net he has now with his hitters..especially with Ambrose coming in..also-- who would he have come in as DS ? and then what does he do with Luke, a 2 year starter at setter?

He had pretty good talent at Arkansas when Rico and Zhao were setting - Krystal Osborne, Kim Storey, Jamie Rohme, Yarleen Santiago, and Jessica Field. But the depth he has now at FSU is definitely better. It will be interesting. As for Luke - if she is not the best setter, does she sit? I think she's a perfectly good 6-2 setter, fwiw.

You FSU fans are going to like Burkert. Although I find it hard to believe as good as she is and she was recruited by many top teams she chose FSU to be part of a 6-2. Will be interesting to see how that plays out.

It's been officially announced on both FSU and Baylor websites that Coach Mac has accepted the HC job at Baylor. He was at FSU for 2 seasons as the Assoc Head coach. He is the 3rd Associate Head Coach to move on to a D1 head coach job in the last 2 years from FSU. Gokhan Gilmaz went on to take the HC job at Charlotte and Holly Watts the HC job at UTEP...
He did not leave due to any discourse... it was an opportunity and great fit for him and his family.. The players loved playing for him.. He was a motivator and great instructor of the game. I know the same to be true when he was at Maryland.
One thing that can be said of Coach Poole... his Associate head coaches have a proven track record of success and career progression. his next replacement will also have this type of opportunity.

I was not that impressed with FSU this season. Poole's Transfer U found "magic in a bottle" during the pre-season and skipped most of the way through a mediocre ACC. I did not see improvement from FSU. They would not have finished in upper half of either PAC 12 or B1G.

No 8th place BIG team (Minnesota) could say that. Do you really think MSU is better than FSU with the home sweep loss against UNC? Purdue, doubtful. FSU isn't as good as Wisconsin and PSU, but they're in the same range as Illinois, Nebraska, Ohio State (actually they're probably significantly better than OSU). Same with the PAC 12, other than UW and Stanford no one stood out as better than FSU. Based on tournament performance, it's hard to put Oregon or Arizona ahead of FSU. I'd say FSU finishes between 3rd and 5th in either league.

I dont believe they beat Florida and Nebraska at the end of they year, and they did in fact lose to UNC.
