The 28-year-old dynamic wing spiker, better known as “Giba”, finished the competition as the third best scorer with 126 points and fourth best spiker as he was one of the leading figures in Brazil’s gold-medal-winning performance, culminating in an amazing 3-1 (25-15, 24-26, 25-20, 25-22) victory at the Final against Italy (see photo). Italian Andrea SARTORETTI and Lloy BALL of the United States followed GODOY FILHO. GODOY FILHO’s teammate Sergio Dutra SANTOS (BRA) was voted by far the best libero at the Tournament. SANTOS has been the best digger in the competition averaging 1.87 successful digs per set and also the best receiver. Both players will receive a special award and a diploma by the FIVB.

Does this mean that Lloy Ball was third place in the voting for MVP? Sadly, Ball gets much more respect from the volleybal world outside USA. But sports fans tend to be more critical of their own. On the other hand, all the accolades he gets from abroad could be a conspiracy by the rest of the world to trick Doug Beal into believing he's the #1 setter in USA.

I don't know who was on the voting committee, but they must have been watching a different tournament. Even that 5'7" guy from Argentina is a better setter and blocker than Ball.
