For a tripod, I was able to use a regular tripod, and mount a best buy bought selfie stick on top of it to get more height. I used these peak cuff retainers on the top of the selfie stick (https://www.amazon.com/Peak-Design-Camera-Wrist-CF-BL-3/dp/B07193B7TL/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1517343023&sr=8-1&keywords=peak+cuff) to avoid the camera getting knocked off. The most important part--using a bungie from the hook at the bottom of the tripod column and my backpack as a ballast--with the backpack just barely touching the ground. All in all, pretty cheap, compact, and durable. I did this for a couple of club seasons, and it took some direct hits from 16 open competition without a snag (well, other than occasionally get knocked sideways and taping the other court...or the crowd).

I've been doing club volleyball for almost 3 years now and honestly the day of using the $400 and under camcorders are almost over. Reason I say that is because there are so many new devices like iPads/iPod touches and other devices like that that can actually do a as good of a job or better than a lower end consumer camcorder. Now I have a Canon Vixia 450 so I can say this from experience. Currently is use a custom tripod that stands about 10 feet. Very easy to construct and if interested please let me know. For a camera I use a 128gb iPod Touch 6th generation that I just purchased and love. I use an iOgrapher case which I have both a wide angle and a telephone lense. I use a small boom mic to help focus the sound to the court and off the screaming parents. Instead of using the typical iPod camera I user the app ScoreCam (http://www.smitter.com/sportscam/) which is probably the best video app out there for IOS video. I use my old 32gb iPod touch 5th Generation which connects Bluetooth to start/pause video and to maintain the scoreboard at the bottom of the screen. Yes I said scoreboard, so no more using my phone to show the score or having to pan so that we can see it. Oh yea, don't have another iPod touch, your any other iOS device (iPhone or iPad) to control your video. I basically set it up and don't touch it till the game is over. I help setup a woman this past tournament to set her up with this app on both her iPad and iPhone in about 15 minutes before her match. She said it was the best app ever!! No more separate files to have to combine. To go one step further I have an addition hot shoe on top of my case which I will use my extra iPod Touch to stream our matches live back to our parents at home. It too has a wide angle lens that I paid $10 for that attaches via magnet. Batteries you ask, I have three external batteries that is use which connects to them via a standard lighting cable. Never have to worry about running of of power. I can go all weekend, 7-10+ matches and never have to connect a device to a computer to transfer video off or plug them into a power supply. PS if anyone is interested in that Canon Vixia please PM me and I'll sell it cheap. :-) We got our tripod used and the lense case for the ipad air was 40$. I use an old 32GB idpad as the camera and control everything from the IPhone. I am still waiting on a gopro dad to get me footage of last years matches I missed and he can't compress video snipits fast enough so he gives up. Editing video has never been easier for Hudl and recruiting coordinators.

One without a fisheye lens... I presume you are asking for recomendations for action cameras without a fisheye lens? If so, I can't give you andy specific makes or models, but I can share with you that the 140* lens on my Vemico 4k action camera is a fisheye lens. 170* is definitely a fisheye lens (i think a lot of the goPro cameras have 170* or 140* lenses). If you shop around and look at the camera specs, you can find what field of view lens angle they use. I'd definitely stay under 120*. You may but off part of the court due to the narrower field of view, but I think that's a fair tradeoff (the fisheye footage looks way too weird for my tastes). I bought scorecam app for my iPad and convinced my daughter to let me use her older iPod during the matches to remotely control the iPad camera and scoreboard. I'm stoked in a geeky sort of way about trying it out at our next tournament in a couple weeks (6-8 hours in the gym, I gotta have some toys to play with...right?).

I just use my samsung phone on a 7' tripod. Works just fine and we don't have to lug in any more crap through conference centers.

I am using a canon G16 and it has amazing quality (you need to tone it down a couple of settings so the whole day fits on a 16GB card otherwise the top setting is for theater sized viewing). I use two batteries and switch them out. It takes great pictures too. Had a G12 before and am really happy with the smaller size and the updates. You can get it for about 450 with extra battery and it works great with a tripod ($50 at monoprice). The upside is this is a great camera for your vacations and other uses. Obviously, it is not in a similar category as a go pro or other adventure type cameras. I used to own one of the G series and sold it after I purchased an S95 maybe 5-6 years ago. I infrequently used my S95 until a couple of years ago when my daughter got hot & heavy with club. About a year ago it was knocked down at one of her hs games, it lived a good life until then. I recently upgraded to an s120 which is now it's a regular feature courtside with myself or my husband. Do I think there's better options? Possibly but for what it is and the quality it puts out and the compact size I am more than pleased. Plus it's not something I used all the time and now I feel like it's worth it to have it around. For the filming angle, I think the coaches have the right idea from behind the back line. It really shows how the plays develop.
A lot of folks film the highlights from the nosebleed seats instead, and it's not a very good angle.

I know it has a sim card, 128gb? I can usually get a full 4 days of matches on it without getting any warning about space. However I typically download them after each tourney so I can play with them, I have a 3 TB external harddrive to save them on. I upload some of them to youtube after I cut out what I want for highlights.

A lot of folks film the highlights from the nosebleed seats instead, and it's not a very good angle. In some gyms it's near impossible to get a good angle from the back. I've read the right side of the court is great and it's usually my favorite place. However in some gyms that too is near impossible. I find myself being very McGuyver with some of my videoing angles just to get good video. Save

I set my tripod up in the corner nearest zone 1 when the gym doesn't have enough room behind zone 6. I upload to youtube as soon as i get home, and i dont edit or trim my videos ever since i figured out the youtube trick to jump ahead in 10 second increments (hit the L key on computer keyboard or double tap smartphone screen). Its about 12 seconds between whistles.

Any camera that doesn't move during play is good with me. It's very annoying when watching recruit video and the parent finds a need to pan from one side of the court to the other.

Works well along with my amazon cheapo tripod. I usually record in 1080P for zooming in/slow motion/etc showing up better so with the card I have (128 I think?) it only holds maybe 16 sets of volleyball? If I turn it down to even 720p I can save an entire tournament, nationals, etc no problem. I also find behind zone 1 is the best angle (zone 5 would be great too if there was no line judge)

I also find behind zone 1 is the best angle (zone 5 would be great too if there was no line judge) The problem I have with zone 1 is that is where the players stand and they are constantly moving, shifting, bouncing and then the coaches come into the picture as well when talking to the server. At least with only one mostly stationary person in zone 5 I can set it up with an idea of where she will be so I can adjust to that.
