Which has the better record next year: Notre Dame or Washington? Notre Dame was 6-23 last season. JMac is an excellent coach, but not a miracle worker (he was 11-16 his first season at UW).

But what guarantees UW (with a first-year coach and without Vansant) will do better than McLaughlin at Notre Dame?

They have top twlent at almost every position. They should finish no less than 5th in confrence

A quick review of UW and ND's 2015 rosters should provide a pretty definitive answer.

True but big difference is Jim was hired 3 days before preseason started in 2001 instead of January before the season. Jim will have had a winter and spring with the team as well as recruiting for the 2015 season.

A quick review of UW and ND's 2015 rosters should provide a pretty definitive answer. 2014 USC roster? What about it? Apples and oranges. I think this is Chicken Little stuff. Washington has a ton of top-level talent coming back. They have continuity in the coaching staff with Cook and Leslie. Notre Dame was just awful last season, their best and most athletic player left for Minnesota, and none of their incoming recruits were ranked in the top 100. Jim is a fine coach, but he's not Houdini. By, say, 2018 we might be having a different conversation. But in 2015, if Jim can get Notre Dame to around .500 he should win coach of the year. If UW ends up around .500 Cook should immediately be on the hot seat.

But what guarantees UW (with a first-year coach and without Vansant) will do better than McLaughlin at Notre Dame? ND was 6-23 with a soft schedule. They played five ranked teams, losing to all of them and winning only one set (against #25 Duke) out of 16. McLaughlin did have some talent on the roster when he took over at UW: Paige Benjamin, Lisa Underhill, Allison Richardson. He added Sanja Tomasevic in 2002, Courtney Thompson in 2003, and Christal Morrison in 2004.

I think this is good opportunity for McLaughlin to do something new. It won't take him Long. He is one of the very best. Wish him luck.

McLaughlin did hit a rich vein of NW talent starting out at UW:
2002: Candace Lee* L (OR), Darla Mhyre* MB (BC) 2003: Courtney Thompson* S (WA) 2004: Christal Morrison* OH (WA), Alesha Deesing* MB (OR) 2005: Stevie Mussie OH (trans./WA), Jill Collymore OH (WA)
* Started on the 2005 Nat. Championship team. The other starters were Sanja Tomasevic OPP (2002/Serbia) and Brie Haggerty OH (2003/trans. from Ohio State).
His first significant non-NW/west coast recruits were Jessica Swarbrick (CA) and Tamari Miyashiro (HI), both in 2005, and Kindra Carlson (CO) in 2006. His first significant national recruits were Jenna Hagglund S (OH) and Becky Perry (TX), in 2006.
Of course, his coaching reputation is a bit higher now, and Notre Dame has more of a national profile than UW did (or does).

If he wins half his matches next year it will be a great season.

My gut is telling me that he is going to have an succuesful season. I mean not top 5 or anything but he will make Norte Dame a power house in the years to come. I feel like he is playing a great card on the recruiting process because of all the midwest talent. Plus his connections to the west coast. People have discussed this before and yes being in the mid-west will certainly have him in the big house in the next few years.
However, I want to know who is his ASSISTANT COACH.... Tell me now!! I want it now... ha ha ha.. :-P
