This weekend at the showcase in San Antonio I saw a college coach there that was recruiting. I know she also coaches a juniors club team. During the showcase I saw her talking to a girl. I thought this was illegal but then I did a little research and saw that she was actually talking to one of her club players. Is this legal or illegal?

If it weren't for the different logos on the t-shirts, I would have never guessed!

I believe the legislation passed at the NCAA Convention in DC and is effective immediately for Club coaches to also recruit… anyone else verify?

she was actually talking to one of her club players. Is this legal or illegal? Legal only if it is in ASL ( American Sign Language) or a language the player doesn't understand

I think it was Division II as well that it passes for. As far as I know, if it is a Division I coach they can not recruit when out with their club team still, but they can always talk to athletes in their own club.

Thank you all for the answers, but it think you are misunderstanding my question. It is not whether a club/college coach can recruit at the same tournament. The question is whether or not it is legal for a college/club coach (who at the time was acting as a college coach and not a club coach) to talk to a PSA during a tournament or showcase.

If they have signed a letter of intent then it is ok... Though many won't... Or if there is a previous relationship (outside of coaching/recruiting I.e: family friend).

Surely if it is legal for them to coach club at all, it must be legal to talk to their own players when they coach. Otherwise, what, they have to play Pictionary during time outs?

A DI coach/club coach may not speak to recruits if they are there for recruiting purposes. If they are there to coach club, then that's all they're supposed to do. After they finish their competition, they are supposed to leave. They aren't supposed to engage in any recruiting activities. They must do one or the other. The NCAA made lines very clear last year.

Again you are misunderstanding me. I thought I made it clearer in my second post. I guess not. This coach was not coaching, but recruiting. She was at the showcase recruiting and talking to her club player. Legal or illegal?

I think the rule is that if the college pays travel expenses, they can't coach club. if the club pays the travel expenses, they can't recruit. if the coach pays the expenses, they can do both. you can always talk to a player on your team--she just needs to live within 50 (D1, D3) or 100(D2) miles of your home campus.

If it's her club player, the two certainly have a previous relationship (unrelated to recruiting). Some uber-strict directors of compliance may say no, but I think the vast majority would say this is fine.
If the college is actively recruiting this player (in addition to the college coach coaching her club team), it becomes a little more gray...

This legislation was changed to allow for this - effective immediately for D2
